What would you do?

Hey folks, I'm just looking for some insight into what other folks might do. I recently purchased my first Gold Coin (1882 Half Eagle in MS62) and I just went back over $500 in my coin fund. I love my Gold but I think its time to go back into a high quality Copper/Nickel/Silver coin. So, I would love to hear what you guys would do. I pretty much love all old US coins. Currently, I am looking at: Mint State Barber Quarter, Proof Liberty Nickel, Mint State/Proof Indian Cent among others. For this particular purchase, I am more inclined to buy an MS coin because I love having that representative example of what a coin "Should" look like.

Anyways, throw me your answers and help me down this journey. I'm having a great time searching. FYI, I give myself $100 a month for coins which means if I'm better off waiting two months I could go north of $700 in March, $800 in April and so on.

    Thanks!!

Almost forgot...I also considered an 1872 Two Cent Coin as it would close that collection out (Minus the ridiculous 1873).

I think you should give me all your money, and I'll give you a random modern proof set. :)

    Kidding!

It isn't about what we think you should do, what do YOU want to do?

You already started with half eagles, so maybe you continue? Or not, or? It's your money, not ours!

If it was ours, I'd overpay for a modern proof set to the first responder! :D:D:woot:

I agree with Brett (other than the part about the modern proof set idea) but it would be hard for me personally not to close out an (almost) complete 2 cent collection . . . but it's not my money

I had some modern bullion (gold eagles ) and an Ultra High Relief gold piece that I sold a few years ago to augment my foray into classic commemoratives. Sometimes when you loose interest in one series of coins you can make it pay for another series that interests you.

Haha, I totally understand that you get what you like and everybody's different. I was just curious what other folks considered. Its not necessarily driving my decision but sometimes its a coin that you don't consider until you start looking specifically for that coin.

I collect Barber Quarters in VF to MS depending on year, mint mark, and condition rarity. If you want a challenge, Barber Quarters are one of many sets to put together.

I won't nail it down to a specific issue since you haven't, but in your shoes I'm looking for a more common date in the highest of grade. Most years of Liberty Nickel in MS66 (for instance) are well within your budget with only a handful higher-graded, and for that you get a really nice coin.

I had a great time putting together a type set. Once I finished, I started a proof type set. I learned a bit about all the different coins as the collection grew.

Well, I finally made a decision. Since I live in Germany, I generally have to go with the online purchases (Specifically from Websites that ship to military addresses) but I have found a phenomenal online dealer with GREAT policies towards APO shipping. I went with a PCGS graded 1872 Two-Cent in F12 condition. Paid $475 ($483 with shipping) which puts me well below book value but also on par with HA. This also closes out my Two-Cent collection except for that pesky 1873 and technically the 1867 DD.

Now for my next conundrum: Printing something to fill a DANSCO album...its a new problem for me.

Thanks for the feedback gentlemen. Believe it or not, I snoop on here and read the forums almost everyday but don't participate as often I should...will try to do better.

I will upload photos once it arrives if anybody is curious.

I pretty much like all US coins, too. So outside my Morgan and Peace dollars, I have a type set including old proofs and old gold.

You should buy a collectors small collection that was passed down to the kid that has no interest in coins...
