Hello, all! I have not been on here for a while, I am in Afghanistan and the internet is kinda sketchy here. I have alloted myself $5,000 to splurge on coins for my collection when I return to the states. My question is, if you had that budget what would you buy?
Honestly, I would buy the best possible 19th century key date coin I could find. That's just me though.
I agree with Zach, it's all up to what you are interested in. If you want to start a set of Morgans, do that. If you want to get one big coin, like a VDB S, do that. If you want to buy a commemorative made out of fruit loops celebrating Independence Day, hey that's great too, as long as you enjoy it.
My plan is to buy 1 or 2 high grade key date coins, I should have said that at the beginning. I pondered a High grade 1909 S vdb but I am honestly kinda turned off by these coins. I think they are more hype than anything. Every show I have been too I could have purchased at least a couple nice examples. To me... thats not a rare or hard to find coin. I like the idea of a high grade 1872 two cent piece or a nicer double eagle though.
I don't think I would be able to afford that many key date coins. I want nice examples of what ever I get.
That's why if I was going to shell out that kind of money, I would talk to as many experts in the series I'm interested in and invest it in a key date or a sleeper key date.
Good idea! For Lincolns you should get the 1914D, not the SVDB. They are much harder to find.... especially in EF and up. I really like these in AU 53-58 and you can do that with your budget.
High grade 1909-s indian or 1877 indian cent, 1955 doubled die, or 1937-d 3 legged nickel. For 5k you can only buy one, but a very nice one. You can also buy a rare date gold coin. I think rare date is better than high grade common coin.
thanks for coming through for us. If I had that $ I would think hard about putting it into one or two coins. Some thing that will be valuable no matter what happens like a 1893 O dollar (you could get an ms63). Maybe an 1885 nickel. 1895 0 dime maybe. In terms of a nice looking coin I'd get a no stars dime
personally, i would buy an 1877 indian head cent, a 1909-s indian head cent, a edward i class 1b penny, a william i PAXS type penny, and a handful of other coins i have on my want list. but you should buy whatever you like.
I think it's doable: Cent: 1914-D, $450 Trends value in VF-20, $1000 in EF-40 Nickel-- 1912-S Liberty (one of the 10 lowest-mintage non-gold US coins of the 20th century)-- $500 Trends value in VF-20, $900 in EF-40 Dime-- 1921-D, Trends value of $450 in VF-20, $800 in EF-40 Quarter-- 1932-D Washington, $500 Trends value in AU-50, or $375 in EF-40 Half-- 1914 Barber half, one of the 10 lowest mintage non-gold US coins of the 20th century, $600 Trends value in VF-20, $900 in EF-40. Dollar-- 1928-P Peace, trends value of $600 in MS-62, or $500 in AU-55 Gold-- 1880 gold dollar, only 1,600 minted, a very reasonable trends value of $350 in AU58 Possible total for lowest grades I listed 450 500 450 375 600 500 350 === $3225
Well I already have the 1921-D Dime, 1932-D Quarter and the 1928 peace so it is doable but when I said i wanted nice examples i meant in the MS-64-66 range hopefully a 65 or higher.
Here's some coins that I think are pretty cool and range from around $1k-$5k per coin, so if you pick the right ones you could get more than one: 1804 Spiked Chin Half Cent in AU55+ 1854 or 1855 Large Flying Eagle Pattern 1875-P Twenty Cent in MS63+ 1857 Large Cent in MS63RB+ 1864 Two Cent Small Motto in MS64RB+ 1851-O Three Cent Silver in MS64+ 1839-O Bust Half Dollar in AU 1942/1 Mercury Dime in AU 1955 DDO Lincoln Cent in AU 1792 Kentucky Token in AU-MS63RB or so 1787 Fugio Cent in XF-AU 1652 Pine Tree Shilling in F-VF Matte Proof Buffalo Nickel in PR66 1853 Arrows & Rays Quarter in MS63-64 1918 Illinois/Lincoln Commem Half Dollar in MS67 1893 Isabella Commem Quarter in MS64-65 1892 or 1893 Columbian Half Dollar in MS66 1915-S Pan-Pac Gold Dollar in MS65-MS66 I'm sure there's lots of other cool stuff that I'm not thinking of, but that's what I came up with off the top of my head... best of luck with your decision!
