I've had this Merc dime in my error collection for some time and always wondered what would cause this. Any ideas? I assume it is a 1926s as the 3's on a Merc. are no larger than the other letters.

Very strange the number looks to small to be a 2 and to large to be a 3. It could be a forgery. I have a 1943 Mercury that's a forgery. So it could be possible.

I would guess that there is an S mintmark on the coin?....if so someone wanted to make a 50 cent coin a coin worth a few dollars.

Most likely just post-strike damage. The bottom of the 2 was scraped off and the metal relocated in a curved ridge. Subsequent wear makes it look like a die variety.
