Hello everybody! Here's the story. I received a $100 PayPal gift certificate for ebay from one of my nieces and her hubby. I'm having trouble trying to decide what to buy or even look for so I'd like to solicit some ideas from you guys. As many of you know,I collect everything but here are some things to keep an eye out for. Any nice 16th-18th century thaler A halfway decent bust or seated liberty half or quarter. Any good looking ancient Greek or Roman silver. Anything at all that strikes your fancy and is unusual. The only catch is that it has to be under $100 including shipping to avoid complications and I would prefer "Buy it Now" because I don't want to do the bidding thing. I'm open to pretty much all suggestions so if you just happen to be browsing through ebay and see something, please let me know. Thanks so much!
I'd look for a copy of the Encyclopedia of US Coins by Breen, and sneak in a copy of the latest Cherrypickers Guide.
Books!....I just got some from this seller.... http://coins.search.ebay.com/_Publications_W0QQcatrefZC12QQsacatZ82190QQsassZsouthparkcoins And he has some good ones---since its a PayPal----you might be able to use it on ABE.com also--they have a large listing of coin books! I've found in the last few years that you can't have too many books---our good friend that is now not with us any more, Catman, used to tell me that even if I only bought 5 books a year I would be doing a good job---I've tried to do more than that and now before buying a coin or starting on a set I try to buy a few books about those and research them first! My bookshelf has 5 shelves...and 3 of them are books/ANA Mag's/Auction Cat's.....its coming along and I've learned a ton! Speedy
If you're thinking books, I've seen an older version of this one that was really good for kids and adults alike. It's an overview but if you aren't familiar with the DK Eyewitness books, they are pretty dense (for 72 pages) and cover a lot of ground. Very colorful and just fun to look through (different than the "fun to look through Red Book, etc.) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150076579492 Note: Never bought anything from that seller, but it lists the ISBN number and it can be found on Amazon and various other book sites. I just found it on ebay due to the gift certificate.
This Geta is 60 bucks http://www.tantaluscoins.com/coins/17668.php 25 bucks 35 Bucks 35 Bucks http://www.vcoins.com/ancient/beastcoins/store/dynamicIndex.asp ^^ Good seller with a good collection of ancients and old world coins
You don't have to limit yourself to eBay... there are "Paypal stores" which are storefronts that accept Paypal. I don't know if there are any (reputable) coin dealers in that category but it might be worth a look. Otherwise, another vote for "books."
He might have to use it for Ebay BIN or auctions (just by the wording of the post above). The Ebay "stores" inventory come up in the seach unless you don't check the box.
1/10 Krugerrands. Mikjo0,you could buy yourself some 1/10 Krugerrands,as they're very nice coins. They are in fact amongst the most attractive of all British Commonwealth gold coins.I've got 2 of them so far - 1984 & 1990. Aidan.
I tend to agree...I like to get the odd book here and there when I can but I often think 'I could have bought 2 coins for that!'...
Thanks everyone for your input. The funniest part of this whole excercise is that I sent my niece a link to this thread so she could follow the progress and received an email from her "reminding" me that the coupon is actually for $50.00 not $100.00 I guess I didn't look at it closely enough but I am truly grateful to them for the gift. Several of your submissions fall into this price range as do most numismatic books so I'll let you know what I get and post it here. By the way,the coupon is for Ebay only,PayPal is just a participant.
If I were you Mikjo, I'd buy a nice 1/10 oz. AGE and then ship it to 09S-V.D.B. Thanks for the awesome giveaway! :thumb:
Mike, If it were me I would get some reference books you can never have to many reference books, and just think of of all the people you could help learn more about our hobby. BRUCE "THE FRANK GROUP"
And you really don't care whether you could have avoided overpaying for those coins by reading the book I'm not worried about where my next meal is coming from, but I still object to paying $100 for a $20 coin.
Id have to agree with the majority here. Id be making a trip to Borders or Waldenbooks and buying myself a book on the coin Im interested in collecting next.
