IMHO the Washington "Godless" coin will be the hottest this year! How often does the mint release coins without a date, In God We Trust, and the mint mark? I know what you are really asking in this thread, but I think this is a huge error from the mint that will be worth keeping one or two. I bought 3 graded by NGC that I will be holding for a long time. I don't expect to see a quick profit either, I just like the idea of having a great error on a first release coin!
i think the AGE or Buffalo 1 oz coin, or the APE 1oz or set.. with all the precious metal coins to be released this year - 8 Platinum, 8 gold eagles, 2 maybe 8 buffalos, the first spouse gold coins ... MY GOD, i just dont think the hobby has enough $$$ to buy all of them at todays gold prices ...
I'm gonna say the first presidential proof sets of the series will be the best buy. If they came out in a silver set I'd snap up as many as I could. Look at the 1999 silver proof sets. They surged way up in a very short time.
As long as you don't get a fake one. You may be right about this coin. Fraudulent Presidential $1 Error Coins Being Sold The United States Mint has recently learned that some individuals are grinding the rims of Presidential $1 Coins to remove the edge-incused inscriptions and then marketing these altered items as error coins. This practice not only exploits unwary consumers and collectors, but also is a Federal crime. The United States Mint recently announced that an undetermined number of George Washington Presidential $1 Coins were minted and issued without the required edge-incused inscriptions, "E Pluribus Unum," "In God We Trust," the year of issuance, and the mint mark. Because true error coins such as these can be rare, they often become very attractive among collectors, many of whom are willing to acquire them at a premium above their face value. Apparently, some individuals are exploiting this situation by altering the rims of perfectly good Presidential $1 Coins to make them look like the recent error coins. Although altering and defacing United States coinage generally is not illegal, doing so violates a Federal criminal statute (18 U.S.C. § 331) when the act is accompanied by an intent to defraud. Accordingly, a person is committing a Federal crime if he or she intentionally alters an ordinary Presidential $1 Coin to make it look like an error coin for the purpose of selling it at a premium to someone who believes it to be a real error coin. Under this statute, it is also a Federal crime to sell at a premium an ordinary Presidential $1 Coin that one knows has been altered so it looks like an error coin to someone who believes it to be a real error coin. Penalties include a fine and up to five years in prison. The United States Mint has no Federal enforcement authority. Rather, it refers such matters to the United States Secret Service, which is lawfully authorized to detect and arrest any person who violates a Federal law relating to United States coinage.
That is why I purchased the slabbed coins and not the raw ones. I hope the graders at NGC know a faked "Godless" Presidential dollar when they see one. I would think they can tell the difference.
Someone is bound to reply in a few minutes telling you otherwise or how they buy the coin, not the slab and TPGs are not for them... However, I tend to agree with you although I still look over them carefully and pay as much attention to details as I can, because its Fun and well anyone can make a mistake....
I am happy with my purchase nonetheless. That is all that matters. I haven't even received my last 2 purchases. I had to upgrade to an MS 65. I can't help myself. lol
im not sure if the 'late in the year' offerings will sell fewer coins since it is the mints policy to continue to seel coins past the year end marker ... and just so i can be corrected on this in case i am wrong ... is the mint only allowed to sell certain coins - for example previous kennedy halfs, westward nickle series from previous years and the golden dollar - past the end of the year mark .. or can they continue to sell anything they want past december 31st.
If the buffalos come out late it will be last year's story repeated except we are substituting the buffaloes for the eagles. ND86 surely you can mkae the mint see reason either come out early or defer till next year rather than create scarcities.
Staggering amount of proposed coins is The key word. My Wish list and the ones I am going to look at in order will be (1) The APE Anniversary set. Regardless of mintage and or configuration, the Reverse proof will be a must for many of those who have collected the gold and/ or silver reverse proof. Great entry coin for first time platinum buyers. I wonder if the mint thought of that. lol (2) The proof and mint set with the addition of the presidential lens. I like the proof silver sets myself. These sets have so much going for them especially if you are collecting them as a series (statehood quarters, 1st presidential set). I think a good price for what you get. (3) Baby Buffalo sets in the uncirculated or proof versions , not sure which one yet , both if you swing it. The mint has got to have a late year entry. (4) Dark horse is the presidential error coin that have been certified by one of the big three. Lots of people do not like these ugly coins but a lot of folks do. At the price you can get these now, why not get one. We are not talking about a house payment not even where I live. Do not overlook the 2006w gold 4 pc set from last year. Even on the secondary market , they can be picked up at a good price. Standard disclaimer. I do not know what I am talking about.
spock1k, i doubt the mint 'intentioanly' creates 'rariteies' .. however, the mint is flooding the market with new items as well as tryign to keep existing items going.. all these items i am sure is putting a strain or at least stretching the capacity the mint has to create coins.. with this in mind, they mint coins when they can, and that means some coins will have to be minted near the end of the year ...
I think we all learned a lesson last year. Keep an eye on the schedule and act quickly when items become available. I used to rely on the mailings the Mint sent out. But now it seems that they arrive after the items have already gone on sale. The folks on this forum do a great job of trying to keep everyone informed of what is happening at the Mint. Kudos to ND for leading the effort to keep all informed. Having said the above, I am anxiously awaiting the fractional buffalo coins. Dragon
It could very well be a "surprise" coin issue that has not been anticipated. Plenty of examples have occured over the last 15 years. Some coins have soared, only to cool down (1992 White House dollars) and others have built tremendous momentum (1995W 10th Anniversary silver proof eagles). I still cannot believe that the 3-coin APE set has nearly quadrupled in price, given the prices quoted from large dealers who regularly advertise in Coin World. I am VERY happy I bought mine online at noon the day of release for a nice round $100. Mark Coral Springs, FL
