It was neat they were bringing out a new coin, but the closeness in size and general looks to a quarter was an issue. Plus you could really not spend them in the machines, so it was seen as a burden to have. Most people I knew did not want them. Then when the Sacs came out, it was pretty much the same thing. People kind of excited a little but just a burden to figure out if you have a quarter or a dollar coin unless you have good lighting and really look. At least with the sacs they were ok in many of the machines. I think the big problem is that with continuing the paper dollar bills, there was no incentive to really accept the dollar coins here. Canada did it right to make one and two dollar coins and stop printing dollar bills.... basically forcing acceptance. You either had to get change from a five in coins and either really start using the $1 and $2 coins or start carrying lots of smaller change.
Yawn, although I thought that the reverse looked better on the SBA dollar than the Ike Dollar. Later when my co-workers complained that they had been cheated by the fact that they had mixed it up with a quarter, I figured it was in trouble.
Nobody likes the coin because of the Obverse. I agree with @johnmilton the reverse does look better than on the Ike. Reed.
Yea, they should of done that. Take the coins as change with no other options beside a big paw full of quarters. Or give them way in the tip jar. That would be good for a lot a folks too.
Sure the obverse design could have been better. For me when they came out my issue was the confusion with the quarter. The SBA being nearly the same size as the quarter dollar and the same "color" really made it tank with the public. I like the idea of dollar coins (and half dollars as well) in circulation.
Meow loves half dollars, but they don't use them locally at all where Meow lives. The bank told Meow they don't have those at all. The last time Meow got to play with halves was in Vegas nearly a decade ago. Meow has never seen or received a golden dollar anywhere in the wild.
This is the design Gasparro originally intended to use. So, of course, my first reaction was WOW!!!!+++ that SBA is by far way way cooler.
It is ugly. Almost the same size of a quarter = problems. The reverse was not to bad. It was not liked at all.
First reaction? The same one I had with the Ike...with the Sac...with the Presidents... Ho hum, another unwanted and unnecessary coin that the general public will never use.
The reverse was an awesome design. The obverse was ok. The 11-sided thing was weird -- I prehaps could have gotten used to it, but, alas, nobody actually used it. I did think it was a good idea to make it smaller than previous dollars so that some folks might actually carry it around in their pockets. But to make it so close to the quarter size, with the same color, was kinda dumb. And, like everybody has said: the dollar coin will never go anywhere so long as the dollar bill is still circulating.
To bad they couldn’t have included her wonky eye into the design at least we could laugh at the coin. As it is now the coin makes me have a sour puss face when I see it. Reed. Picture borrowed from @derkerlegand
I liked the SBA coin when it first came out (I was very young) and I still like it today, though I agree it was a total monetary failure and a bad idea from a circulation standpoint. It seems like most people don't like it because SBA isn't an attractive enough woman, by today's standards at least. Lincoln was no adorable cutie either but no one complains about the "ugly" cent. I have heard people complain about the "ugly" Ike dollar, though, so at least there's some consistency there. In any case, I like the SBA design and I know I'm in a huge minority, but that's fine.
Exactly! I couldn’t care less about Lincoln cents... boring design, no precious metal, mintage in the millions, etc.
