For me the best old unsearched rolls I went through were the ones marked Federal Reserve Bank of New York, with the Federal Reserve Bank of Denver coming in as a close second. I have also had some good finds in dime rolls from First National Citibank of New York.
Hmm been putting the best ones in Danzig albums, not really sure at this point which coin came from which roll with the second best duplicates going back into a bin for eventual resale or use on the next album. The comment was based on general feeling of satisfaction after going through the rolls rather than a written record saying this 1911 penny came from that roll and this one came from that roll. Agreed most of the Lincoln key dates from the teen years I have roll found are in g4 - vf. Quite a few of the post 1945 pennies were XF or better, but only a few from the earlier pre 1930 years acquired from roll searching could be called XF. The issue was filling the albums as a first step. Buying better coins one at a time after an album is filled via pot luck (roll and tin can searching) is an ongoing never ending process and I am buying new albums to fill fairly often. I don't photo coins as I take them out of a roll or a baggie or a coffee can. What I can give you instead is some pics of the latest Danzig 7106 album I am working on. I began it two nights ago and all of the coins pictured came from recently (in the past week) acquired rolls or bags of raw pennies (90% of them from one Ebay seller who sells in 10 roll (or more) lots at a time). I have pulled the plastic covers from the book for these pictures. There are 24 empty spaces left in the book, but a new bag of pennies came in yesterday, so I am hopeful of filling them soon. Hmm, as usual, 'there was an error while uploading.' Sigh. Okay, photobucket it is.
Your best rolls were marked "plan 9 records?" Interesting.. I have never encountered that marking. What I have observed is many 'unsearched' rolls I went through over the years that were simply marked '50 cents penny,' were mostly a total waste of my time. What I have found worth my time is old original rolls from an identifiable source. My personal advice when shopping on Ebay is ignore any vendor ads claiming estate sale from the estate of a not named person with rolls from a non identifiable source. <There is one exception, but I think forum rules prohibit me from identifying an ongoing Ebay sale as a source worth looking into. Let us just say there is a guy dealing with a really huge quantity of Wheats and I haven't been disappointed by the one quart bags he ships.> So avoid generic wrappers and instead focus on roll wrappers with a bank name or an old out of business company name.
