    Kinda. Or so it seems.

Actually, its a different font. One font, the type 1, is sans serif meaning no serifs while the other (type 2) is a font which has serifs.

    Type 1 LIBERTY.jpg
Specifically, the "M" cones to sharp points.

    Type 2 LIBERTY.jpg

Again, look at top of the "M" .

E PLURIBUS UNUM is also different in that on the Type 1, the "U's" line up!

    Type 1 & Type 2 E Pluribus Unum.jpg

There are difference on the Obverse as well but they are really, really minute. Such as, the "R" in LIBERTY is a pegleg on the Type 1 Obverse but has serif's on the Type 2 Obverse.

Thounsands of dollars will go to the person that finds a Type 1 Obverse Die paired with a Type 2 Reverse.

The other IKE Types are shown below with regard to the specific earths but other difference do exist.

    T1-T2-T3-T6-T7 Earth Copyright.jpg

The Type 1 Reverse can be found on the 1971-1972 coins (Philly and Denver) while the Type 6 can only be found on the 1971-D coins. Some very rare Type 1 reverses DO exist on some 1971-S Proof coins.

The Type 2 Reverse can be commonly found on the 1971-S Proof, 1972-S Proof and on some 1972 CnClad coins for 1972 (Philly mint only)

The Type 3 Reverse can be found on 1972 Philly coins as well as 1973-1974 and 1977-1978 CnClad coins (Philly, Denver) as well as their SF CnClad proof counterparts.

The Type 4 and 5 Reverses are the Bicentennial coins while the Type 7 Reverse is only found on Prototype coins of which 3 are known to exist.

Each of the "Year Type Variants" are commonly known as Type 1 and Type 2 such as those Bicentennial Coins.

This means that 1971 has two Types. Type 1 (RDV-006) and Type 2 (RDV-001)

    1972 has three Types. Type 1 (RDV-001), Type 2 (RDV-002) and Type 3 (RDV-003)

    1975-1976 has two types. Type 1 (RDV-004) and Type 1 (RDV-005)

As a "series", the Reverse Design Varieties (types) are broken into Type 1 through Type 7.

As an individual Year, the "coins" are identified as Type 1 through Type 2 or 3.
    (i.e. BiCentennial Type 1, BiCentennial Type 2, 1972 Type 1, 1972 Type 2, 1972 Type 3, 1971-D Type 1, and 1971-D Type 2)

Confused yet? Look at enough of them and it becomes perfectly clear.

^^Could not "like" more than once, unfortunately :)

Edit - and I have all earth types except 7 ... the 4th prototype will be mine someday ... I just have to look through about 100,000 more 71 SB's, no big deal ;)
