For the veterans out there what is your success with coin types? Have you given up on any? Half Dollars Quarters Dimes Nickles? I have had some luck with half dollars and war Nickles
Halves and nickels, primarily Silver. Dimes and quarters. I have given up on because dimes can be shorted and quarters are just too flooded with the states.
Halves is where the silver is, but they take more time to get. I believe the boxes have the silver filtered out. I only get what a bank has on hand.
Quarters are a complete waste of time. I have only found one 1964-D in those. I get halves, but prefer CWR vs. BWR. I do mostly nickels and dimes these days. Cents are too much of a PITA to bother with - I only take them as a courtesy to get the nickels and dimes also.
My average is normally 1 silver or 1 proof per bank box and 2 silvers per customer box. So, it isn't that high of a yield but i dont mind since i can do a box in about 8 hours and i love dimes. And i'm looking at each dime too, so if i just went by the sides i could probably cut it down to 1/4th of the time.
I went half roll hunting yesturday. got 1 roll but did not look at until I got out to my car. dohhh! it turned out to be a 2001 P mint u.s.mint roll. duhhh it's gonna all be 2001 date. ugh. I have a question about 40% silver kennedy's do they have all silver on the edge of the coin ? PM that answer thanks.
Some 40%ers have a "clad" looking edge. That's why edge searching is not recommended because sometimes they look like a regular clad Kennedy. Usually the stripe is a dark brown but I have found some that are red similar to a regular clad. Go by the date.
But is there the stripe of copper or is it just the silver edge like on the dimes? I normally check every one for the date but i'm just wonderring about that as i still havent found a silver half yet.
I really like how you look at every coin I do that to. I look for error coins and proofs mostly. Such as 1982 no p or a special 1996 w dime.
Those are what i'm looking for too. And it's working. I've found 2 proofs this month and there's no way i would've found them if i was just edge checking.
I pretty much only look though nickels and pennies anymore. I used to look though dimes, and found some nice 2009s, but never found very much silver. Nickels I like the most because you can still find coins from the 30s and 40s fairly regularly.
I've been a cashier at a supermarket for about a year and a half. I've gone through hundreds of rolls of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. From my experience, the dimes are the worst and the nickels are the best. The only coin i've ever found in the dimes was a 2006 one dollar Jamaican, that was a pretty cool find. For the nickels, I have found about 50 1940's and 1950's including a 1942 war nickel with the P mintmark at the top. I've also found 2 1939's and a 1937 buffalo, as well as about 10 S mintmarks from the 50s-70s. For quarters I have found 2 silvers, 1962 and 1964, a couple of foreigns, and a 1968 S. Pennies, plenty of wheats, lots of canadians and a bunch of other various countries. Also a bunch of S mintmarks. The best canadian I found was a 1938.
