What type of damage, or minting malfunction caused this mark

    I found this quarter in my quarter container. I save them from change I get and let them accumulate for a few years then take them to the bank. I just started metal detecting 6 months ago and I have learned to check all coins now. I found this quarter while going through the quarters that I had. Don't ask me how many times over the years that I just took them to the bank. I hope the pictures help. Thanks for any info that you have.

    IMHO.. That is PMD - Post Mint Damage.. looks like something struck it after it left the Mint

    Agree. It appears to be incused and looks like it pushed some metal up on the edge of the scratch.
