What type of damage is this?

Hello all, just trying to figure out what kind of damage is on the coin. Tons of little dents. Not sure if it is corrosion (natural vs caused by cleaning) or man made (knife, screw driver, etc...). The coin has nice details (VF35+?) but the damage worries me a bit.

    Thanks!

There are many possibilities for those dings, like you mentioned.
Could be dings from an object, or the coin could have been corroded and cleaned. Generally though, if it was corrosion, I would think they would be more spread around the coin. The dings in this case are grouped closely and only on the obverse, so my vote would be some sort of object did those. On that note, I really don't collect these and hopefully someone with more expertise on these realy halves can chime in.

I do think it is a nice looking half though.

the neck looks like acid, at the very least cleaned to me. but if it was acid, it would probably be more prominent.

They didn't have Clearasil in those days.

It might have been on the ground at one point, stepped on by mistake, and there you go! Instant crater face!

Do you guys think it affects the value that much? I know it isn't an extremely valuable coin, but anything makes a difference. Especially if I come across another coin, etc...

Yes. The damage really hurts the value.
Like most coins of this age, it looks like it was cleaned at some point.
The damage and the cleaning make it tough to put a value on the coin.
I'll guess the obverse was cleaned a bit more to remove PVC damage.
It actually looks to have some PVC still working on the coin.

So is this a type of coin that PCGS would reject if I ever wanted to send it in? Not thinking I would, but in case I come across similar issues on another coin.

    Thanks!

I do not see that coin making it into a graded holder. Sorry. :(

Without the damage I'd call it a high Vf maybe even a low XF. With the damage I would net grade it no better than a VG.
