Ok guys, 1st of all this coins are FAKE/COPY, I bought them when I was a kid (about 8 years old...I'm 23 now) in a local fort called "El Morro"...this were the 1st coins I ever bought, and are the coins that got me into collecting hehe...thought I took me a while to take it seriously as now! lol anyway what type/kind of coins are these? all I know is that are Spanish coins...but I would like to have some info on them...and since I don't really know what are them I dont know how to look info about them...also...how much the originals would cost. Oh the pics are a little big...so sorry for to the Dialup people here! (like me! ) Thanks! Ivan Edit: Also, please excuse if I should put this in the "World Coins" forum, hehe since I'm mostly here, I didn't thought on the other one! lol
They are all copies ( except 1 - it appears to be a design made up by somebody ) of Spanish colonial coinage. It makes sense for them to be sold in Puerto Rico - tourist's novelty gifts, pirate treasure coins, pieces of eight etc etc. They are the same coins that got me started on world coinage about 30 yrs ago. And they got me started for the same reasons that tourist buy the copies. Only I was the one diving on the wreck of one of those Spanish galleons and finding the real coins Here's some pics of the real thing - 1756 8 reales obv 1756 8 reales rev 1777 8 reales obv 1777 8 reales rev
Hehe lucky guy! These coins are the reason I want to get my diver licence to search through the coast around the fort...many old wars there...so I guess many galleons should be down there ... also...so 1 is not fake? they all came in the same package...I was a kid so I throw it away...but I remember very well they all came in the same blue and clear package. Thanks GD, Ivan
Gee GDJMSP, Those are nice pieces (he rolls over, plays dead, barks and begs a whole bunch.) Are these going on the auctions block or are you just tauntung us? catman
Ok, I'm pretty clear about the big ones, but how about the other 3? One is a large one but cutted...I dunno why...and the other pieces...hmm what are they?
lol, really? I didn't knew that...I thought about that option, but I thought...nah no way!, and how about the "pizza" like coin and the 5 sided one. Thanks!
That's where the name "Pieces of 8" came from. The wedge shaped piece of coin pictured above shows change from the dollar.
Nice, hehe I've haven't heard the "Pieces of 8" term b4, I stick to US coins...hehe I just have these and some other that I used to collect as a kid...most of them are pretty new ones, I didn't look for any specific date or anything like that.
IvanV,the Tortola cut coin,if it is genuine,is of interest to collectors of British Commonwealth coins like me,as Tortola is the largest island in the British Virgin Islands. The 'Tortola' counterstamps are the official ones, but the 'Tirtila' counterstamps are the private ones. One has to be very careful regarding the cut coins,as there are a lot of very deceptive forgeries out there.
No - you misunderstand. They are all fakes - but one of them does not appear to even be an accurate copy of a genuine coin. I think somebody just made that design up themselves. The 5 sided coin you asked about was known as a cob. They were made by taking a bar of silver, slicing a piece off the end of it and striking that piece with coin dies. These coins were typcially all of irregular shapes.
Hi GD, cob hmm...ok I'll take a look at ebay, I want to see the market price of the original ones. Thanks!
Hi Aidan, well they are all copies...I'm looking for originals at ebay, now I know how to search for 4 of them...still 2 more to go. thanks!
IvanV,thank you for your reply to my posting.I do have a Tortola-related numismatic item - a 1 Pound British Postal Order issued at the Road Town G.P.O. Tortola,British Virgin Islands in 2002.I bought it off a postal order collector in Sarasota,Florida for US$2 a few months ago.He sold me a whole lot of postal orders for US$1 each, which included ones from such countries as Venda,Fiji,& Zimbabwe. The British Virgin Islands do not have their own postal orders, but issue the British Postal Orders. They do,however, have their own coins, but no banknotes.I have got a 1c. & a 5c. dated 1974.The British Virgin Islands coins are very hard to find though. What's the weather been like in Puerto Rico? It has been very hot here in New Zealand - 20 to 26 degrees Centigrade.
well christmas just passed...it was pretty cold...to be in the caribbean...about (40-60 degrees Farenheit)...now it's getting back to normal...(about 80 degrees)...shoudl be around 80 until summer which is usually between 90 to 110 degrees... ...oh...also, do you know a website, besides eBay where I can find those coins...no luck in eBay...
Not sure what you mean by this Ivan - are you saying you can't find any genuine examples of Spanish colonial coins on ebay ?
Hello GD, hmm...yes I meant that I haven't found genuines examples of these Spanish colonial coins on ebay...I did found some similar and some cobs...but I would like to find the same year of the ones here (the fake ones). Thanks!
Ahhhhhh - so it is same dates you are looking for. That - you won't likely find right away. But there are quite a few genuine examples available on ebay on any given day. I'll send you a PM with a link or two of dealers I know to check
