I was excited because I won five framed coin lots at a local auction in which a number of the coins toned beautifully in their holders. However, when i got home I was shocked (I should have checked at the auction) that the back of the paper holders were taped over the coins to prevent them from falling out. Can't believe someone would do that....anyhow I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on the best way to remove the coins and minimize the tape damage? Thanks in advance!
If they were mine, I'd gently peel them out and place the coin, tape and all still stuck to it, in a glass of acetone. After a long soak, the tape should slide right off.
After removal, an acetone or, perhaps, zylene soak. It looks as though you could cut (the tape) around the coins, simply pop them out, and try to gently peel the tape off before moving forward.
first do you really want to remove the coins? I ask as many times they are polished and if that is the case sell them as is. If there not processed , as already stated acetone is the path. You may be able to gently pull the tape off and then soak to remove the residue left behind by the tape. good luck the color looks great on the half.
Thanks....this may have to be the option I attempt. Believe it or not the tape is stuck on really well even after all of these years. I can even see some globs of glue on coin surface where tape has dislodged.
I don't think you'll have any permanent price-destroying damage; tape comes off easily with acetone. Use it outside. The 1940 half looks great.
Polished? I didn't realize. This lot doesn't look polished (at least to my eye) but that could explain the appearance of one of the other lots.
