What to do with a fingerprint coin

I'd like to get an opinion on this 1997 p matte finish nickel. I purchased this recently, and when it arrived, I noticed that there was a trace fingerprint right above Jefferson's forehead. I bought it at a reasonable price, and the print did not show up on the listing pictures. I'm 50/50 as to keep it or return it. I like the coin but am worried that the print will become darker over time and thus ruin the over-all look. What say you. Regards.

    Return it. Fingerprints are permanent.

Even if you could get the print off it would damage and devalue the coin @Sting 60 Good luck and keep on sharing.

The question I would have is there details on the slab ? also do they have
another one at the same price or one
at all that can replace it ?

Fingerprint might have shown up after grading.

Fingerprints do not detail a coin. And can be found on high grade examples in most denominations.

The Fingerprint would drive me nuts Sting.
I personally would return it. Especially on a low mintage Jefferson.

On a coin like that return without a doubt it's just to eye catching and deceiving for such a nice example. As said above it could've appeared after grading or they were drinking on the job:rolleyes::rolleyes:.Fingerprints don't immediately designate a details grade, many other factors take place.Even that I've seen lots of straight grade examples with prints that don't have enough alterations for details as a last resort.

I had to zoom in to maximum just to
catch a glimpse, allot of coins have distractions so it’s a personal decision.

    Then there’s this…

If you're still within your return period, I'd send it back if you find it distracting.

Otherwise, if you think you could live with it, and the price was right, I don't think it looks too terrible. Though there is that concern of the print darkening over time. (I'm not so sure it would, but maybe better safe than sorry.)

I lean towards returning it if that's still an option.

That is what I thought also but I looked it up at NGC site and it is visible on the coin there as well. I again didn't see it because I really wasn't looking for it.

It is a SP68 straight grade. Seller has no replacement.

Return it >>>>and buy at the same price point the set that can be had below the graded one, then you will ha e the silver dollar and nickel. 25k is the lowest Jefferson mintage.

That's the question, will it darken over time? NGC site has the slabbed coin, but doesn't say when it was slabbed so I don't know if it was slabbed recently or not.

I thought the NGC cert pages had the date the coin was slabbed, down in the fine print somewhere? Or maybe that’s just on copper coins? I’ll have to look.

I don’t think it will darken much, from the looks of it, though I could of course be wrong. If replacing it is a hassle, and you decide you can live with that rather subtle fingerprint, without it driving you to distraction, then keep it. It doesn’t look all that awful.

Both the 1994 P matte & 97 p matte two key Jefferson nickels unless they were pulled from the original government packages turned gold or yellow. Some splotchy too. Here's a 94 in an old ACG slab.

A totally underrated coin either the 94 or 97 lowest minted Jefferson nickel.
