hey everyone. As i have stated before i used to collect as a child and have gotten back into the hobby. I collected all sorts of random things that i thought were cool as a child and to get back into it i started a lincoln cent album. As the album fills and only the rarer dates are left i know i will be stopping the album soon. As i know i wont be able to afford a 1909-s VDB etc. I am looking into the next type of coin to set my sights on. Any recommendations on something that isnt too expensive? I do prefer things that are no longer in circulation i have a list of things i am interested in but it is pretty lengthy. i will include it to give you some options to choose from Flying eagle cents (i like this set because there arnt many dates so it is smaller and if i made it i would more than likely exclude the 1856) Indian head cents 3 cent nickles Indian head (Buffalo) nickles Liberty head (V) nickles (have some from childhood and do find it an interesting coin) Seated liberty half dimes Mercury dimes (always had an attraction to this coin and have a few from shildhood) Twenty cent peices (for some reason i find a strange draw to this coin because of the uniqueness and the fact that it has a strange value 20 cents? not something you see anymore) any recommendations on a set you think would be a nice addition but would be too pricey to put together. I am in college so i dont have very much money to go around but i also am not planning on putting together a set quickly either so i can save up for each peice and take my time if need be. Thanks for any input! :kewl:
Flying Eagle Cents: In Fine condition a date/mm set would cost about $250 if you exclude the 1856 and 1858/7. Indian Head Cents: In Fine condition a date/mm set would cost about $3500. Three-Cent Nickel: In Very Fine condition a date set would cost about $6000. Buffalo Nickels: In Fine condition a date/mm set would cost about $2500. Liberty Nickels: In Fine condition a date/mm set would cost about $2000 when you exclude the 1913. Mercury Dimes: In Fine condition a date/mm set would cost about $2200. I don't know about the seated liberty half dime or the twenty cent piece. You'll want more opinions but just trying to get things started for others.
thanks that helps a ton i really appreciate i will wait for other opinions but that is a big help to start
I've almost completed my entire buffalo album for only a few dollars, including the key dates. How? By buying rolls of dateless nickels and useing nic-a-date to restore the dates. It's a cheap way to collect and its exciting when you find a rare date.
"Twenty cent peices (for some reason i find a strange draw to this coin because of the uniqueness and the fact that it has a strange value 20 cents? not something you see anymore) There is your answer. It's the one that has drawn your fascination for none of the usual reasons. Now you have to determine what level of resources you want to devote to the series and how patient you are in acquiring a set so you can decide condition ranges for your collection.
thanks for the info guys and i definately see what you mean about the twenty cent peice. I thought that would probably be my choice that or the mercury dime because i have always loved that coin as well. Any know a rough guess on what a set would cost in G/VG -- F/XF -- MS?
A date/mm Twenty Cent Piece set goes for about $7000 for VF-20 in the RedBook. The mintages for all the years are as the following: 1875 P - 37,000 1875 S - 1,155,000 1875 CC - 133,290 1876 P - 14,640 1876 CC - 10,000 1877 P - 350 (proof) 1878 P - 600 (proof) Also the 1876 CC is a rarity.. 3 out of the 7 would be hard to get. I'm not bashing the coin because I would like to own one as well; I'm just bashing the set in your perspective. Another idea if this is your favorite coin. Go for just the 1875 pieces because they are the easiest/cheapest to acquire and it is also the first year the coin was issued. You could make a First-Year Set out of these. In VG a 1875 Set would run at about $700 according to the RedBook In EF a 1875 set would be about $1500 In MS60 a 1875 set would be about $3000 Keep in mind these are RedBook prices and are just a range to look for.. Actual sale prices vary from RedBook.
Thanks for the info. i understand what you mean and i like the idea of a year set instead of a full set. Thanks for all the help and i will keep everyone updated on my choice and progress
would nic-a-date be considered doctoring a coin? just out of curiosity cause this is the first i have heard of it
Oh i'm not sure, It is used for nickels. I was just joking with him. You seem like you want to build a nice set and take your time on it if need be. I suggest doing exactly that.
If I were you I would collect key dates/scarce dates of common coins, or just unique coins like you stated before with a 20c piece. Maybe a 1932 S or D Washington Quarter, a 1921 Peace dollar, a trade dollar, a 1909-S penny (IH or Lincoln (VDB or not)). Or maybe a three legged buffalo. Depends on your budget and what you want. Just some suggestions
If your thinking of a Merc set. I'd like to suggest this: A high grade full band set of them in a short set. Just the 1940's dates. Then you go with more worn ones for the early dates. This makes 2 good looking sets and maximizes your money. Good luck either way.
so with the merc set are talking about just a date set or dates and mintmarks. by high grade full bands are you talking slabbed or unslabbed? and high grade meaning XF-AU or MS
you cant obtain a 1916D in F for $2200! Mercs are way too hot right now........I have slowly backed away and am enjoying my roosies. I suggest waiting on the mercs. If you do have the passion you could always do a UNC short set and that wont run you too much. But once again you would want all of them to be no FSB unless you wanna pay the coin for the 1945P Buffalo nickels are ugly in any grade but UNC. flying eagle set would not take any effort at all. I personally like three cent nickel as your best coice
He is probably talking about date set. FSB(full split bands) are definitely a MS-type coin. You will not find a mercury dime slabbed in a TOP TIER grading service unless it is a proof or a 1916-D. If I were you I would buy some FSB, with different dates, they don't have to have a certain mint mark.
