I finally got my submission back from ANACS and they said my 1875-s Trade Dollar had PVC or other surface contaminants, it's in a PCI encapsulated holder. What should I do with it?
Rinse it in Acetone. It will remove the PVC. You can get it at WalMart in the paint dept. Get pure Acetone and put some in a saucer. Rinse the coin and pour out the Acetone and do it all over again. About 3 rinses should work nicely. The acetone will do nothing to the coin but remove the PVC. ANACS has a bad habit of saying coins have PVC contamination where none is evident. I have sent coins to them when I knew that the coins were clean and not contaminated. I don't know what they see but out of ten coins sent usually 2 will have this comment. Might be just one grader doing this but I wish ANACS would clarify this. Hope this helps, Gary
Well you have two choices then - either crack out the coin and clean it yourself, then resubmit. Or send the coin to NCS and have them conserve the coin and forward it to NGC for grading and slabbing. But with either choice you stand the risk of having the coin body bagged for damage with you being out the grading fees.
It won't have a chance with either until the PVC is removed. And even once it is - NGC may refuse to grade due to damage, if the PVC did indeed cause damage. If it were me - I would start by sending the coin to NCS.
Very good advice 9roswell, this is sure the first step in recovering the coin, and maybe having it slabbed in a worthwile case. Even if the PCV is stopped and their is no damage, I personally believe the odds are, the grade will be lower than the one you now have on the PCI holder.
I would crack it out of the PCI holder, and either put it in Acetone, or like GDJMSP said...send it to NCS...either way...it might not be the same grade when you get it back. Speedy
I think you answered your own questions gentlemen--The coin has already a bad flaw that NGC will not slab--It has been cleaned, So whether it is sent to NCS or not, NCS will be able to remove the PVC, unfortuanately as good as they are, they cannot reverse the "cleaning" part-- >>So there fore my unpleasant suggestion is, save your money, sell this coin off, write off the loss and buy a good coin in the same or better grade with those proceeds--
Well....is it graded by PCI cleaned or is that what NGC put on the bodybag??? If it is slabbed by PCI cleaned I have to go with CiscoKid (I just watched a DVD of Cisco Kid) and say NGC will not slab it...you will have to send it to ANACS..... Speedy
