Hi guys, I searched for this but could not find it answered already. I am wondering, when collecting coins, should I be collecting all mint's; P, D and S? Or do most collectors just stick with the P and D mint? I am sure a lot of it falls into personal preference, but just wondering what most think. Thanks!!!
WELCOME TO THE FORUMMMMMMM. My suggestion is to collect bottle tops, gum wrappers, rocks, arrow heads, etc due to there are already to many coin collectors around. Just kidding. But there really are a lot of coin collectors nowadays. However, there are a real lot of coins also. As to your question. The first thing to really do is acquire a book or books on coins so you know what is available. If you decide to put your coins in Albums, you will see most have places for P, D and S mints. Of course the older ones have places for O and CC also. This sort of forces you to collect coins from all mints to make a completed Album. Some even have places for error coins such as the Lincoln Cent ones with places for the 55 Double Die, 72 Double Die, 22 Plain, etc. With such silly items it really makes it difficult to fill an Album. Although I suspect most collectors collect coins from all Mints, the present S Minted coins are proofs and must always be purchased, not found in change. Also, making collecting difficult. The main thing you would normally always hear when asking that is to just collect what you like, want, have access to, etc. Attempting to follow what someone else says to collect is there preferences and not yours usually. Asking what to do for a hobby is like asking who should I marry, what car should I buy, how much should I spend on a date, which is the easiest store to rob, etc.
Because I collect mostly 19th century coins, I collect P, D and S, as well as O and CC. Thats pretty standard I think. As for modern stuff where S is mostly proof coins, I don't collect any proofs at all, but thats just me. Guy~
Hello everyone, For me, I collect everything that I can afford. Also Just Carl really hit home with buy the book! That is most important. in a few other threads it has been said to learn about the coins before you buy them for a few reasons, knowledge is key, and so you know when you might be getting a fake/altered coin. oh and WELCOME TO CT! Regards, Stan
There is no wrong way to collect (with the possible exception of polishing/altering your coins in any way!). If you want to collect only Philadelphia minted coins: Go for it! If you want to collect only Denver minted coins: Go For it! If you only want to collect the different edge variations on the current India 5 Rupees: Go for it! One of my most favorite things about this hobby, perhaps my 2nd favorite aspect behind the history of it, is that there are literally endless options, and endless new things to learn about! I personally collect US coins by date and mint mark from circulation, and world coins by whatever comes in the bulk lots I buy Occasionally I will purchase indivigual coins but I can't afford to do it that often.
