I don't think that either company makes sizes especially for these coins. I don't have my Red Book with me, so I don't have the exact sizes for all of them. (I tried Googling them and had limited success). I found this handy chart here at JP's Corner and here. 1) If not, what is the closest size that would hold the coin? 2) Is there any way to keep the coins from rattling inside a holder that is too big? 3) Are the "black ring" inserts in Air-tites the solution? 4) Do any other companies make such a holder? Silver 3-cent piece (14 mm) Nickel 3-cent piece (17.9 mm) Half dime: 15.5 mm Quarters (1796 ~ 1828): 27mm (?) Half Dollar (modern): 30.61 mm Ike/Peace/Morgan/Trade Dollar: 38.1 mm SBA Dollar: 26.5 mm Gold Coinage: $1: (Type 1) 12.7 mm or (Types 2 and 3) 14.3 mm $2.5: 18 mm $3:20.5 mm $4: 22mm $5: 22.5 mm $10: 27 mm $20: 34.1 mm
I've always thought that the Air Tites with accent rings looked nicer. Below, is a sampling of my casino chips with and without the accent rings so that you can compare the difference in appearance. I no longer have any of my coins in Air Tites because they have since been slabbed & graded, but the fact that the accent ring has some "give" makes it easier to use a ring that is (very slightly) smaller on the inner diameter. I don't recommend direct-fit Air Tites that aren't the exact size of the coin. Chris
I may be wrong but I know the T part is right, but there's a T type or series that allows room for or foam rings. They are neat if you want to like color code or just not use foam rings. I do have silver Eagles with the black foam. To me it just makes the coin to plain look nicer.
If your interested go to JPS corner on ebay. They offer a buy what you want type approach & great people to deal with. I've bought several storage items from them and have always done me right.
I prefer the black ring air-tites. I use 'em for most of my capsuled coins. But they block the inscriptions on edge-lettered coins. So I have some "direct-fit" capsules. Unfortunately, sometimes it's a very "loose-fit". To prevent rattling, I use a wedge: Some 2 oz Rounds fit better than others... Where do I get the wedges? Well, if you buy the black ring capsules in bulk, then you get also get ring's hole (like a donut hole). Lots of excess ring material... I just slice-off a sliver and wedge it in the capsule. Easy peasy, snug fit, no rattle.
Lighthouse makes some holders similar to Air Tites that come with a spacing ring kit to hold a variety of sizes:http://www.lighthouse.us/epages/lig...s/leuchtturm_us/Categories/US/US_2281/US_2395
http://www.air-tites.com/Air-Tite_Ring_Type_Coin_Holders_1.htm#.V-RvgPArLDc AirTite sells almost every size you listed above in the black/white ring holders. As stated above, you can usually get anything to fit using the next size down since the foam has some "give."
You may already be aware; but for those who are not aware, especially with older coins like this, when the coin does not fit snugly in the direct-fit holders - the problem isn't with the holders. The problem is almost always with the coin - the diameter of the coins is not consistent. It is often smaller than it's supposed to be or bigger than it's supposed to be.
Air-Tite has black and white rings for their holders in every millimeter increment from 10mm-42mm. Since they're foam, if you're careful you can go to the smaller increment for every coin necessary and get a good fit. The only problem is, not all of your holders will be the outer diameter. I'm a fan of CoinSafe holders, since they're both airtight and show the rim completely, but they don't have your three smallest sizes covered.
