Hey i am unloading a lot of my world silver coins and junk silver ( war nickels 40% Kennedy half's) . I was just wondering what silver coins should i buy for the cheapest amount? Should i buy Morgans, peace dollars or the new American Eagles? What would be a good idea that i should buy and what dates and where minted? Thanks BIRD
Bird, why do you want to buy? Collecting? Silver investing? Different answers depending on your interests man. Let us know why you wish to buy any silver dollar, and we can at least offer opinions. Chris
Canadian silver dollars are a great way to go. Attractive designs and the silver coins were minted all the up to 1967, so you generally have to pay a huge premium over melt.
A little bit of collecting and silver investing more of a collecting stand point thought. Also for the Canadian silver dollars what amount of silver are in them?
The pre-68 Canadian silver dollars contain .60 actual weight of silver. They can generally be had for $25-$27 for non-key date specimens.
In my opinion Morgans fit the bill. You can start off buying common dates. With the recent run-up in silver prices you can get many common dates in higher grades for close to melt. Start out buying them just for the silver. Then buy a DANSCO album, 96 holes to fill for the basic business strike set, 95 of those are reasonably fillable by the person of average means, based on grade. Start filling the holes, see how many holes you fill with the common dates, then you can start chasing the more scarce dates. The perfect combination of silver investing, followed by collecting. They've got a unique and interesting history behind them. They're one of the most popular US coin series, so if you decide to sell, you'll have no problem unloading them. You can collect varieties, VAMs etc. Beware though, collecting Morgans can become addictive!
I agree with RaceBannon start with one coin and album and try to fill it up. I started with Mercury dimes and all are easily obtainable but the one(1916D.) But once you are down to only needing the one you can sell off the whole lot to buy that one and start again. Then you'll have a complete set!
Bird, if you like collecting, and like silver dollars, I would start on a Peace set. All but two are available circulated for bullion value if you look hard enough, (ok maybe 3, 1928s might be hard). Its a fun start. Morgans of course can be started as well, but a lot more keys.
I suggest Morgans, for a number of reasons. They are big, heavy, and beautiful. Most dates/mints are easily obtainable in uncirculated MS grades for very reasonable prices. There are many ways to collect them -- date set, full date/mint set, CC's only, VAMs, etc. However, before you buy your first one, buy a book or two or three. One good one is "The Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars" by Q. David Bowers. In it you'll learn fascinating history, how to grade, how to buy, and there's a page on each individual date/mint coin. Also search on "Morgan" in this forum and learn from some of the thousands of informative posts on the topic. Go with caution if you plan to buy on eBay, or anywhere but trusted dealers. There are good deals, terrible deals, and outright fraud. Learn to know the difference. Good luck and welcome to the forum.
I will kindly just say Morgan's are an acquired taste. If I was mean I would say they were the fugliest coins the US minted until the modern presidential coins.
There's something to this. I've never had a taste for them. I think the Peace dollars are worlds better. . . but their design just doesn't seem to strike very well, on average. Perhaps half dollars from the 19th century would be the way I'd go.
Thanks for all the help i will take everything into consideration. I think I will buy Morgans starting with the non key dates and once i get them i might switch to Peace dollars. I have one more question are the new American silver eagles worth buying at all?
Of course they're worth buying if you can find them at the right price. They have more silver in them to.
My 2 cents I would go for a Graded Morgan dollar with a TPG grade & a top 50 or 100 Vam detailed. one like this. Or wait till the 25th AV ASE set comes out and buy that :kewl:
ck out jellomart Sure if you buy its on the bay + I will ship it for free in the USA! :kewl:
