Hello. The clear letters on the reverse of this ancient coin are almost strange to me . The obverse shows a bearded old man. It weighs 3.06 g. Could you please assist me to identify the letters and the coin as well. Thank you. Charles
It's a coin of Arados. Head of Zeus, prow of galley, lettering is Phoenician. Possibly SNG COP 36ff, but it would really be helpful if your images were better and you gave us the diameter of the coin.
Diameter is 14 - 16 millimeters. As for the images, they were scanned at 300 dpi resolution. Can I do better? Then , what do these letters mean in the Phoenician language? Thanks.. Charles
It's a bronze coin of Arados in Phoenicia. Dated in the local civic era. Your date may be different from that below. http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=179510
Possibly not. I also read mine as 115 (right to left 100+10+5). The handwriting is different on the three and there is a difference in the clarity of the numbers but I think all three read the same. I might add that I bought mine because it was junkbox cheap and really clear for a Phoenician numeraled date.
