    Hi Gang!

I picked this up this past weekend at a local coin show. It obviously is a cent struck on a wrong planchet. The piece weighs 2.25 grams. The pictures attached are a pretty good representation of the color (maybe a little less red).It is non magnetic.. It is UNC and has luster but it about the color of a chain link fence. I don't think it is on a dime planchet, it doesnt look like any cent on dime i have ever seen...I have owned 40 or 50 of those... but you can see that the planchet is clad... any thoughts?

Is it magnetic? OOP'S, I reread the opening post and the question is answered there.
    Probably a dime planchet.

Dutchman....I found a dime yesterday that is VERY odd and has a rim very similar to yours. I'll post later.

Well a dime is supposed to weigh 2.27 grams so that's what gets my vote and the side view looks like there is an exposed copper layer - what else could it possibly be??

It maybe a Panama Balboa . I think we minted them here in the USA in the late 70's

There's no reason to think it WASN'T struck on a dime planchet. 2.25 grams is very close enough to the normal average of 2.27 grams and is certainly within acceptable tolerances. Color isn't a reliable indicator of composition. I would think it was just oddly toned.

    ah, ha!

I just re-looked at the picture of the rim.

    and, yes!

you can see the clad layers in there.

    Nice, and thanks, Mike.

I have a nickel that was struck on a cent planchet and it is extremely silver looking.

I believe that if the die has been in use long enough, it will have a layer of metal on it that can be imparted to the wrong planchet and change it's appearance. Hence the copper looking ton of the dime planchet.

You mean 1/10 balboa. True, but they were minted on the same planchets that we used for dimes.
