Two 1964 nickels, the one on the left is much smaller, i know its hard to tell from the photo. Also the edges are round instead of flat! Does anyone know what kind of error this is?

I don't think it is an error. It sounds to me like a spooned coin which is after mint damage.

I've found pennies like that and no one ever has come up with a good reason for what it is or how it could happen. The one on the left really dose look smaller. Also very worn.

The best explanation I know of, aside from being tapped to death by someone with alot of time on their hands, its laundromats. Coins fall out of unchecked pockets, get into the machinary of washing machine and dryers and get tumbled. Does a number on the machines too. I happened to be in a laundromat one day when the owner was repairing one such machine....the culprets were soon removed.....3 beat lincolns looking exactly like your nickel. You don't even have to have the same timing, just walk into a laundromat sometime and listen to the dryers....your bound to hear one or two machines with coins rattling around inside them ;)

    Hi,
There have been several posts on coins like this. "Spooning" is one culprit and the clothes dryer is the other.

Pennys are filed down around the edge to use as dimes in vending machines.

There's no common reason someone would grind down the edges of a nickel
but it is possible to get inadvertant damage from a clothes dryer or by getting
caught up in machinery or even the hub cap of a car.
