what it was worth when.

Is there a site that gives historical costs of coins? I'm interested mostly in US coins from the mid 19th century and up. I've always been told to buy the highest grade I can afford. I'd like to see the wisdom in that for the long term. I could buy an AG-3 16d merc now but to get a fine will require some long term saving. I'd like to see how it would have went if I had done this 20 years ago. Thanks.

I always use the completed auctions at Heritage. www.ha.com

A problem free graded '16 D dime in F-15 went for around $1000 in 2000 and goes for around $2500 now. Of course if you are selling, you need to take into account fees and premiums which can be quite high.
