Just curious as to how people on this forum collect their paper money. Do you go by serial number, star notes, or what is your technique for collecting paper money.
No serial numbers, stars, or other subtleties for me! I collect "French" banknotes, which is to say printed under Banque de France direction. Dave
Type Collestor I use to be a type coin collector & still collect coins ,but the ratio of 99% to 1% of coins to paper has reversed & now have mostly collect paper. But the habit of type (one example or few if the price is right ) collecting continues .if I see something nice I buy it it could be an obsolete/FRN/Silver Cert./Legal tender/MPC or a nice intaglio printed vignette or a Souvenir card from the BEP or the Am, Bank Note Co Vignette sets,I just buy when the price is right & know I'll never have enough money to complete an entire series without passing up other good deals.
Hey Conner1, I'm with you. I pretty much collect whatever, if the price is right. I have around 1200-1300 banknotes, with about 90 percent being world banknotes. I have a collection of Morgan dollars and some proof sets, but I really to like silver certificate star notes though. But if I see something I like and the price is right I usually get it, but I retire in 22 days and a real substantial part of my income will be gone and will be living on a fixed income so my collecting will be seriously curtailed.
MorganMan: I think this is an interesting question. The responses I have read thus far seem to fit the personalities of the collector's themselves from a viewpoint of how they post and what their interest are when conveyed in these post's. For me, I have several different groups of Notes I collect ie.. Large Size, Small Size, Fractionals, and Obsoletes. Each one of these groups has sub groups by Series or Issue. One factor for me is to add nothing to my collection below a Grade of AU58 and thus far only 4 exceptions have entered the collection (due to availibility). For example, Large Size (Large Brown Seal Notes) Legal Tender is an area I have strong interest in. It is my preference to collect Fr# 100, 101, and 102. Each of these $10 (Jackass Notes) Series Fr# notes have "Red Serial Numbers" as do the $1, $2, and $5 Notes. It is a goal on these notes to complete the 3 note set for each denomination $1, $2, $5 and $10. The $20 Large Brown Seals have Blue Serial Numbers and get very expensive very fast in high grade as do all the notes in all denominations for this type. So for me..each Series of Notes that I collect have their own special requirements depending on what I want to do within that Series. What I will tell you is that I spend hundreds of hours searching on a daily basis to find the very best notes I can. I work hard to be able to purchase these notes and plan well ahead of time. I establish relationships with select Dealers and build a trust with them.. when the 5-10K notes come along I have the integrity and past business relationships with these dealers to put the note on terms and meeting that demand is at times challenging as well. It is easy to spend in excess of 60-80K a year on notes for the collection, the nice thing is with market fluctuations, you sometimes get better deals than other times. It all evens out when you are after a high end collection. I hope that best explains it for you...as my methods vary like the weather, depending upon the note I am after. Regards, RickieB This Set of Small Size Series 1934 C Stars took me 4 years to assemble. The amount of time, conversation and late hour auctions proved to be the best route. Rickie, I like your style or method of collecting focus on an issue/series ,the notes you post are fantastic ! Wish I could do it ,but that is what's great about the hobby seeing different methods & notes & the way collection accumulate over the years. I love those NY FRN* notes all of them are fantastic !
Those are some beautiful bills. I must look away. OK, just one more look. Oh no, my hands...reaching for...my wallet...NO! I CAN'T COLLECT PAPER TOO!!!
You can do it ,I did & haven't regretted the day I switched form mostly coins to 99% paper,a little at a time or cut back on coins for the New Year resolution & start Paper collecting .
Give up, Ladies First, you can't fight it. Once RickieB shows you some of his incredible collection, you're already hooked.
for the most part i was going for notes to add to the Chicago collection. i have mostly small sized notes but there are a few large sized beauties. i lke them all. radars, repeaters, low serials and stars. i do have plenty of non Chicago notes. Silver certs, red seals's, FRN's & national notes.
RickieB, I admire your collection. But more than that is I admire your extreme DISCIPLINE it takes to be able to do what you do. I'm finding after 5 years of collecting paper money what area's I enjoy in collecting so I'm getting somewhat more selective about what I buy, but still far from narrowing it down to 1 or 2 specialties. There is just so many beautiful banknotes out there and so little money to purchase them. But I really enjoy looking at everyones collections as they post here on CoinTalk. Just keep em coming. My technique for collecting paper money is visiting RickieB's house and waiting for him to turn his back.
Thanks MorganMan...this is but a small sampling but the gereral idea spans across the collection. I would love to see your collection. Borgovan... LOL I have a surprise waiting for any who want to do this...LOL Besides, all notes are kept in a Bank Safe Deposit Box... RickieB
I just recently branched out into banknotes, but I have no real techniques for collecting them. If I see something I like I buy it. I am, however, most interested in collecting obsolete notes from north-central PA at the moment. Guy~
Hey RickieB, here is a link to some of my banknotes I have posted on BanknoteBank http://www.banknotebank.com/user_view.aspx?ID=RodgerC130and also here is a note that I just got today from Don Kelly.
Nice collection MorganMan...I am not to up on the World Notes but you have a nice US collection going! Don is a good guy,."Glide Free" RickieB
