Being 70 years old, I collect coins for the pure fun of it. I buy silver coins only on the lower end of the scale. I have been looking at the mass produced U.S. Mint, PCGS, NGC, etc. Commemorative silver dollars lately on ebay. I like the designs on some of them. Do you think they are worth the $20.00 to $30.00 range that I can get them for? I like 90% silver or better. I tend to also buy the raw G-VG Morgan and Peace silver dollars if they are not completely cull coins also in that price range. What do you think of these dollars also? Are the worth it? The wifey says I have 27 days before I am off the Ebay grounding she put me on. LOL. My collection consists of random coins I feel like I can make a decent purchase on. I am not going to try and complete an unaffordable set of anything. I love the hunt. Am I the only nut that collects coins this way?
If you're having fun, that's what it's about. Buying big silver coins for not a large percentage over melt isn't a bad thing to be doing. I buy a circulated Morgan occasionally, I do look for coins that have Anna's eye outlined, and I avoid 1921's. The coins just look better to me, and there are plenty to choose from. But that's just me.
If you're buying the modern commems in the hope that they will appreciate in value, I think that ship sailed a long time ago, and it is altogether another story if you hope that silver will increase in price. However, if you're buying them just because you like the designs, well, that's another story. Chris
Most definitely.....and if you can get them in 'plastic', all the better. The dollar amount you mention is below mint issue price, not to mention the fees associated with holdering the coin.
