I'm working on a set of BU Canadian silver dollars. There are a couple that are expensive, by my standards, but most of them I can afford without letting the family go hungry. I'm interested to read what everyone else collects.
You should keep your eyes on the upcoming Belzberg auction of Canadianc oins. the most complete set ever of Canadian coinage. Check it out at http://www.heritagecoin.com. Some Canadian coins are very hard to find in high grades and will command a premium. I mostly research and read. I like to read about everything and similarly i collect everything. As far as organized sets go i am putting together series sets of New Brunswick, PEI and Nova Scotia regal coinage and a type set of Newfoundland. And i have tons of world coins.
Stoichastic Accumulation Some coins are actually in mylar flips, but most are in a ceramic dish on my desk. Money is the concrete expression of the best aspects of human nature. As an advocate of laissez faire capitalism, I am proud to have a coin from medieval Troyes where the "dusty feet" came each summer. A British provincial token honours Sir Isaac Newton. "More Trade Fewer Taxes," says another. My Romans were struck by Marcus Porcius Cato and Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. My transportation token (vecture) is an electronic ticket from the Chicago I Train. I have a phone card from Belgium commemorating an early computer device. The paper money from Surinam is pretty.
My focus is on German coins (Federal Republic), but I also have quite a few from elsewhere in the European Union. Primarily 20th (and 21st) century ... As for foreign coins, I do in general not attempt to have "complete" sets but pick attractive and otherwise interesting pieces. Mostly Western/Central Europe and North America. My collection of, errm, US state quarters (types, not mint marks) is pretty complete, though ;-) Christian
My foreign collection is over 1,000 coins from 141 countries. I would like to have at least 1 coin from every country in existence during the 20th Century but I have not limited my collection to 1901 to date. My oldest is a 1 Duit dated 1746 from the Netherland East Indies. Canada has the most coins represented(71). In the past I've bought bulk lots but am now narrowing my search efforts more toward finding missing countries.
Peruvian Soles. US silver dollars, especially if you're a variety collector, are just too expensive. Can't wait to get my 1393/893 (blundered date) back from ANACS took me a while to find one that hadn't been tooled
Haven't started here, but am finding out you can get some really nice stuff at far lower prices than you can for American coins.
I enjoy coins with insects. certain coins with hands, coins with certain stars. coins with small coin designs on them. I like topical/theme collections. mostly insect coins. the thrill of hunt. nothing like getting a coin you have been hunting to find/buy for 7-10 years.
For me, USA is foreign. In addition to all types and periods of USA, I am trying to complete type sets of coins and banknotes from: Russia - everything from the Soviet era (pretty much done), early types including commemorative from 1991-1995. Specific coins from Ukraine and Poland. Israel - everything starting with pre-1948 "mills" period and until today, including commemorative and never released for circulation. Germany - empire, Weimar, Nazi, Federal Republic, Democratic Republic. In a different album I don't care much about there are Canada, UK, ex-Soviet, European countries, especially WWI period, Asian etc. A total amount of all coins would be over 2500.
I collect German Talers and 2/3Talers mainly...., from the 16th to the 18th century. I collect the coinage from the German States my family came from which is Saxony, Bavaria and Prussia, but I will include other German States if the coin is a commemorative issue or a City View Taler.
