what is up with this 1916 cent

    I found this searching through a lot of Wheat cents. Anybody have any idea what the extra metal by the date might be caused by? It is separated from the 9 in the date.

    Looks like a cud to me.

    A cud would involve the rim of the coin. this could be a die chip. scratch. gouge orsome other indent of the die. cha't be sure without closer look. It could also be a retained strike through. sorry I can't help you more but someone else will be along to help.

    best case a die chip.
    Similar to, but in a different place than the LIBIERTY cents.
