    Hi all,

First of all Id like to thank all who have helped me with coin questions in the past..... :D

Ok, this 1853 dollar has what I think are mounting marks, although Im not sure as they are so small, almost invisible to the naked eye and only clear when magnified X60....
There is a lot of excess metal on this coin, from what look like die cracks to doubled stars, again invisible to the naked eye and only show up under magnification.
The first photo is of what I think are mounting solder marks,
The second, third and fourth are the 'doubled' stars behind Libertys neck and the rest are of various 'cracks'?

Any ideas on what is up with this coin? Is it even real?

Thanks in advance to you all...

lots of great detail shots, but can you post a pict of the full obverse and reverse?

    Thanks

Looks like a lot of die cracks so if its a fake, there may have been a lot of them made ;)

I think it is counterfeit. 1853 gold $1 coins are probably the most counterfeited of all the gold coins.

    Hi Charlie,
    Thanks for your input..
Any idea what the genuine/counterfeit diagnostics are for this particular year ?

I don't know much about gold coins but something doesn't look right....its almost like a cast copy....
I'm not sure about the fake part but something doesn't seem right to me...
I hope that for you it is real...

I'm reasonably certain the coin is a counterfeit.

There are a few different counterfeit varieties known for this year. One of the diagnostics is the rough, grainy surface of the fields. Another is mushy details. Then we have a give-away special mark - the die crack like marks through the stars. That one clinches it.
