Ok, what is different about this 1966 Kennedy Half? Please describe anything you see that is out of the ordinary. Also, please GTG, as well.
Well, the photos are a bit overexposed, but not so much that I can't see the doubled profile between his lips and chin.
Apart from a DDO and a possible collar clash (which could also be the way it was imaged), looks like a prooflike SMS MS66 PL
I really want to see some doubling, I just don't see it. It's too bad the rev doesn't have that same pizazz. SP66
Look at the circled areas. Photograph is not the best, but I think this clarifies it, with the enlargement:
@Pickin and Grinin So, here is the obverse of one of my 1966 SMS Kennedy DDO (my apologies to @Morgandude11 - I'm not trying to hijack your thread at all, just sharing a clearer image of the same or a similar variety in order to help) Take a look at his lips, chin, neck, even the ear. In the OP's picture, you can just barely make out the doubling in those areas.
I know what the DDO looks like I just wasn't seeing it in the photos. I see yours plain as day @stldanceartist
Yep, I figured you'd know what the DDO looked like @Pickin and Grinin - just wanted to share mine so people could see a clearer photo and reference it backwards to @Morgandude11's image. If you look closely at OP's image, you can see a bit of the doubling on JFK's chin and lower lip, which is why I picked it up when I first saw the images. That, and AFAIK the SMS Kennedy for 66 has a DDO (doubled profile) and the missing designer's initials on the reverse as the major die varieties, so that's automatically where my brain went for the coin in the OP.
Most got it right. It is a SMS Special proof, with a DDO. I think it should have been attributed as “doubled profile,” as most other DDO coins have doubled lettering. Also, I feel it is undergraded as a 65. I think at least a 66.
