I was looking at a partial roll of 64-d Kennedy halves I saved as a kid...they were in a taped coin tube so I've only recently begun to look at them. And tonight, I see this to the right of "IN GOD" on one of them. It looks like a misplaced partial letter, or maybe its just ...what? I need a noun, here, guys. What's a thing like this called? Thanks/1 WIN_20240203_21_40_51_Pro.jpg

Is this indented? If so it looks like it took a hit from the edge of another coin.

Looks to me like it got hit by the reeding of another half at some point in its life.

Looks raised to me. If so, it's just a small die break. No Trifecta today.

I think you're right. Although it looks raised when viewed straight on (like longnine009 noticed), side lighting shows something else. It looks dented, and markings like reed marks are in the walls. WIN_20240203_22_13_14_Pro.jpg

I call them “sea gulls”…they look like bird wings flapping turned the right way…but when there are 3 or 4 bird wings you have to call them “dragons”…Spark

Agree with @Abramthegreat, it "took a hit."

I see a small indentation so I’d say it’s a hit from another coin.

Follow up... I have a roll of uncirculaed Franklin halves I just opened and am looking at closely. Franklins have reeded edges too, and it seems that many of the dings on these coins were caused by edge impacts. Now that I know what they are, I'll probably be seeing them everywhere!

Determining whether or not it is incused or raised tells a lot. If you aren't sure, use a wooden toothpick to gently rub back and forth across the anomaly to determine.

If-you look carefully, you will see a small amount of die deterioration doubling on the right edge of each letter, with a slight difference in the photo coloring....except on the "dead sea gulls" which does not, so it must be recessed. IMO, Jim

So THAT'S what that is called! I have long noticed that false doubling on some coins, but I thought it was mirroring since I usually saw it on shiny MS or proof coins. I'll go read up on die deterioraion now....Thanks!
