Protruding may be the wrong word, but not sure what word to use to describe it!!!! It probably is PMD. I'm mainly just trying to figure our what it is that would penetrate through the coin!!! Here are pics that show it does stick out some on obverse and reverse. It also shows what I think is displaced metal on the second picture!
I can’t say what it is as I have no idea. It looks as if it was in the metal and just a good strike to be included in the coin. Definitely a keeper. How did you find this? CRH, received in change, etc.?
Found it CRH!!! Weirdest thing I've found CRH!!! Plan to keep it!! It's at least an interesting anomaly!!!
How do you figure it was struck into the coin, if it protrudes on both sides? I'm thinking some kind of damage...
I agree it is PMD! I'm trying to figure out what the item it is!!! It would have to be pretty hard to penetrate the quarter like that!! If that had happened during the strike I would think it would have prevented some of the details since it is raised, but the details are still there! So, after the coin was minted, what would be hard enough to do this and how do you think this could have happened?
Looks like it may have been struck with a knife / chisel or some similar tool. Displaced metal on one side and broken thru on the other.
So are some of you saying there isn't anything imbedded in the coin? If a chisel was the only thing that caused this, wouldn't there be a hole there? To me, the pictures show there is no hole, and the object is sticking out from the surface on both the obverse and reverse! Still trying to figure out what the object is!
As I understand from the responses, it’s damage and someone, somehow made a hole in the coin and inserted that object in there. I think it was in the metal when the planchet was formed and the coin was created like it is today. I see no displaced metal from drilling, cutting, chiseled or any other means. I also see no holes or light passing through from one side to another. I can’t see any signs of gluing this piece in place on either side. I do see where the metal is raised from it being where it is but I would think that is normal from the dies. And if, I say again, if I’m correct that object has to be as hard as the die. Find out all you can about this piece and it may be worth the price to slab it. Lol
