If you're using a scanner, here's how to improve your images. Select a scan area of 3 x 3 inches. Scan at 600dpi. Adjust the light level of your scan one notch higher, as most are too dark. Do not use the entire scanner glass as your "scan area" and then crop away 95% of that space; that guarantees bad images.
