Hey guys, got another coin to ask about :D

I found this one in a box of dimes, I had missed it the first time I looked through the box but as I was putting the rolls back in I caught it. It's MUCH thinner than an average dime. It makes a different sound if I drop it lightly on a table compared to a normal silver dime. Here are the pictures. I thought of PMD, but the thickness of the coin is the same all around. Even the parts unaffected by whatever it is. The "W" in "WE" is completely wiped out.
    Thanks

    Have you weighed it?

I just did. My scale is unreliable to say the least. It weighs in at 2.0-2.1g. It's leaning more towards 2.0 than 2.1.

    hamman88 Spare some change, sir?

What did a normal dime weigh?

A normal silver dime jumped between 2.5-2.6g, what it should weigh.

I wonder if it is some kind of trick coin ? Perhaps cut in half and ground down in the center and cemented back together ? Maybe, they were making two headed dimes and glued the wrong halves back together or something.

I think there would be a seam somewhere near the edge of the rim. I have a double tail half dollar from coin roll hunting that has a seam running along on of the edge's of the rim. Here are some pictures of the rim at an angle. No seam visible.

100 views and no answer? :(

Does anyone have an idea of what it might be?

OK. I see now. I thought the very first pic was a seam in the dime, but it's 2 dimes held together showing one thinner. lol Now it looks like the rim was worn off perhaps by a slot machine or something. That would explain why it looks thinner and some of the weight loss. But I am no expert for sure. Hopefully, it's a wrong planchet or something ?

Probably just a thin planchet that was coined into a dime. Maybe it was a foreign planchet that made its way into the system...

just throwing this out there but have you checked if it is attracted to a magnet?
Then for sure it'd be a trick dime since i remember having a quarter that stuck to a magnet for some sort of trick.

I wouldn't say that just yet. Wait to see if one of the error specialist chime in. Most of them travel from forum to forum besides doing their own error work. Patience...

NEVER ! I repeat NEVER take the forum as a final word. To really tell, an expert must examine the actual coin. I don't think a real expert will give you a final word without having the coin in hand himself. Even the more knowledgable people here are sometimes mistaken. Believe it. You really should try and find a dealer and show them the coin. IMHO

are all dealers experts?? i know quite a few that know less than some of the people on here...

I agree with swish, just because they're a dealer doesn't mean they're experts. It just means that they're business minded coin collectors.

On another note, this coin isn't attracted to a magnet.

Aw come on guys. We all know not every dealer is an expert, but where else can he get someone to look at the coin and perhaps place some value on it ? I mean if someone makes him an offer of $20 he at least knows it is worth keeping and possibly sending in for grading. That was the reasoning behind my suggestion. I didn't think he was going to be able to get that information as accurately here as if he showed it to someone in the business.

Unless they specialize in errors most dealers do not know much about them at all and their opinions are FREQUENTLY completely off the wall. (Your average dealer will call any type of doubling, including machine doubling, a doubled die.)

I don't see any evidence of tampering on the subject coin, and with a weight of 2 grams it is well below the standard weight, yet appears to be relatively high grade. I would think this would indicate an underweight planchet, and since it appears a little weaker on one side it may be a tapered planchet.
