Howdy y'all, hoping someone could tell me what this item may be.

It has a dark brown plastic backing (looks very old) and a clear viewing window on the front. The viewing window is heavily hazed and I cannot tell what's inside- it appears to be a piece of quartz or a piece of bone.

Has anyone seen one before? Would love to know what it is and when they were made.

Pearl buttons or decorative pins for clothes were commonly made a sliver of pearl , with black or reflective silver type metal backing and a quartz cover for protection. If they separate many pearl layers desiccate and crack and powder out, leaving the backing and the quartz cover. Guess with details and photo given.
