what IS this thing? 5 cent 'piece'?

I got this at a flea market today for 50 cents..looks like some sort of coin that was flattened then imprinted upon. It's about 1" in diameter. Anyone have any ideas as to what this thing is? The obverse looks larger because of how I resized the scan but it isn't.

I did a little googling but can't find anything. The reeded edges are a little more goldish looking than the scans show but the token/coin itself is definitely brown.

    Thanks for any advice!

why don't you let that sit in a closed jar of denatured alcohol overnight and see if it cleans up a bit.

Ah, a merchandise token. I hadn't heard of those but I can see now that that's what it must be. Even though it's not worth anything it's still pretty neat looking. Thanks for the advice, all!

It would nice to determine what the P & G stand for. Could be an old Proctor and Gamble merchandise token.

Yeah, that's what I assumed it stood for...did they have retail stores at one point?
