There is a extra "frosty" spot where the field should be clear on a 2010 Yellowstone ATB Quarter from a silver proof set. I'm guessing it is a lint spot but I don't really know. Check out the pictures and see if you can help me determine what caused it. I'm new to this and had problems with the lighting and wasn't sure what resolution to upload. These are 640x480 and hopefully they are sufficient enough to tell.
Since nobody has hazarded a guess, I will. Maybe somebody can then correct me . It looks to me like something was either deposited on the quarter before or during the strike or perhaps a flaw in the planchet prior to the strike. In any case, I guess it's not real interesting and I think it mostly detracts from the beauty of the proof coin. Is this sort of thing on a proof coin rare? Is there any extra value due to it? I assume there is not but I guess I'll just keep it for the Silver value... Jay
Definitely looks like a blemish to me on the coin itself, like it was over polished or something. As for extra value? Not for me, I wouldn't buy it like that, I'd ask for the next one without the blemish, etc. Proofs to me are suppose to be perfect, errors are not perfection.
If I were you I'd open its capsule and would try to remove the spot with something like a compressed dust remover in an aerosal can. It might just blow off, as the coin stands now it is visually unappealing and wont be seen as too attractive to most collectors.
