How much would you pay for this Morgan? I am tempted to buy it, but am not sure if it is worth the asking price. Let me know what you think. Thanks...
At the price I would not buy the coin. The coin is definitely not MS67, but it does look clean from the pics (but I don't like the angle). My guess is the pics are hiding a number of hits in the field on the obv. It's probably a MS64, and is worth around half the auction price right now.
Don't bid, or if you have already, retract your bid. This is one of those "third-world" slabs that is only good for using as a shim under an uneven table on a hardwood floor. From the small photos, it looks MS64 at best because of the detracting marks on Liberty's cheek, and it is hard to ascertain whether or not it has been cleaned. Coins like this get into these slabs because they can't get into a top TPG slab. Trust me, if it had been an MS65 or MS66, this coin would be in an NGC or PCGS slab. This coin is probably not worth more than about $60. The other bidders are, foolishly, thinking that even if it grades MS65, it is still a $375-$400 coin. No way! Chris
That is what my gut told me, I just needed an "experts" opinion. And no, I did not bid on it, and will not. Thanks!!!
The slab and associated grade are meaningless. In a case like this, you must view the coin as a raw coin. Having said that, I agree with raider. The coin appears to be MS64. It might have a shot at MS65 but the quality of the photographs and the angle make it impossible to properly evaluate the surfaces of the coin. Numismedia wholesale is $52 for MS64 and $145 for MS65. This is the type of coin that you would gamble on and pay MS64 money hoping for an MS65 grade. But the coin is already above MS65 price. If you buy the coin at this money, there is no upside!
