I have this coin that I need help identified. I tried posting pictures, but.. 1. the pictures were horrible due to bad picture-taking equipment and 2. i couldn't figure out how to post them due to my stupidity. So, I'll have to try to describe it as best I can: The reverse looks just like a wheatie penny. In fact, you would think it was if you never looked at the obverse. The obverse is "hollowed out" and looks like it's tin on the inside. If I had to guess, it would be a cap to something. But, there isn't any screw marks or any indication that it could be snapped on to something. I'll post pictures as soon as I figure it out.
Without a picture it sounds like it was machine out perhaps to make a 1959 wheat cent (by machining the obverse side to fit inside the wheat) which was never made.
I agree with Rock. Back in the 1960's nearly every High School in the nation had Auto Shop and Metal Shop classes. The guys used to play with cents. They were acid dipped to make them smaller so they could be used in lieu of dimes in vending machines, parking meters, etc. Some were chrome plated, because it looked "cool". But a lot of coins were hollowed out on one side. Generally the reverse. Another coin was ground down to fit inside the hollow. Making a two headed coin. Since the Wheat back is left on yours, someone likely was trying to make a 1959 or newer Wheat Cent ? That would be my guess anyway. gary
Hmm, very interesting, gary. That makes alot of sense because i also have a very small shrunken penny that i happened to get from the same guy.
