Found a Kennedy half with an extra reed. Anyone know what this is called and how common it is? I need to know what to put on the 2X2.
    Thanks

I think that may be just a "cud". But I will wait for more responses. I have never seen it before, Nick. May be someone has.....

I can't quote on whether it is considered an error or not! I find it tedious enough at times just to look at the Obverse and Reverse of many thousands of coins and really don't concern myself with the reeding. I know that there are some Morgan Dollars that are VAM's due to extra reeding but haven't really heard of anything about other denominations with extra reeding being errors.

It looks like the collar broke. These collar dies eventually wear out just like any other die and will break. Once they crack you get metal filling that void resulting in what you have here. I recently found one similar but with a bigger gap. HERE:

It's a chipped collar. A type of collar break.

Too much time on your hands!

How and why did you ever look there?

After I look at the edge to do a quick check for silver, I take about half a roll (all that fits in my hand easily) at a time and look at the edges as I turn them looking for partially struck out of collar. This half roll were all newer, so it stood right out. Then I sort by date, look for cherrypickers errors and see if I can upgrade my set.
