Hello guys, i bought a box of pennies from the bank today, and 4/5 of the way through i find this. Why would someone carve a picture on a penny like that in the first place? Although, the funny thing is, it is detailed so well. either way, is this common? is it an error? pre or post mint? HELP!
It's post mint, that's a stamp of John F Kennedy, btw. They're very common, see here: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=lincoln+penny+kennedy&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_sop=12
It is a Kennedy Lincoln penny. It was minted in 1973 and somepeople stamped Kennedy on them, because of the similarities between the two. Such as this...
Yeah, although not "common" in change or rolls, people occasionally find them. I found one once and put it right back in my bin to put in the coinstar machine.
Although it is PMD and doesn't increase the value of the coin to a collector as such, it's a cool find. Hang on to it.
I'd keep it if I were you just for the history significance along with the fact that it only really costs you one cent...
