Anyone have any idea what kind of coin this is? My mom said belonged to her dad. It's next to an American quarter for size reference. It seems kinda heavy, but maybe that's because it's larger and much thicker than coins that I'm used to holding. He found them in someones trash when he was a kid. We estimate 1927. I've also posted a copy of the photos to my google photo drive: https://plus.google.com/100418205457298943995/posts/bo1q3j4NHdW

This should be moved to world and ancient coins.

I thought it looked kind of like a button, rather than a coin. It looks cast instead of struck.

Too heavy to be a button. How do I relocate to world and ancient coins?

Can we see the other side?

Both sides are shown--they look similar but not exactly the same. Picture of side one has an American Quarter with George Washington shown next to it. The flip side has the opposite side of the same quarter next to it (Tennessee). I used this technique to differentiate sides. Theres a 3rd picture, again next to the quarter, to show width.

Looks cast to me as well. I'll guess it's some type of token.

I am guessing a token of some sort. I am looking into this to see if I can find anything and if I do, I'll certainly post here. If not, I hope someone else does as I am very curious now. :)

My eye balls are going, what quarter :)

Did you flip this monster vert or horz for the photo shoot, looks like the Q was flipped canuk style.

Was the magnetic susceptibility discussed yet?

I edited the photos to make reference to the quarter and side 1 and side 2 clearer. Both coin in question and American quarter were flipped left to right, not up and down. The reason why the American quarter looks upside down is because thats how it appears being flipped left to right (or right to left). Updated photos are below. The link to my google photo drive is dead, below is a new one, but they're the same as whats posted below.

As far as being magnetic, I don't have it in my possession at the moment so it's something I'll have to get tomorrow. Do I just hold a refrigerator magnet up to it? My initial guess is that almost certainly not.

Thats awesome if you did. My mom always gets emotional, to the point of tears, when telling that its all she has to remember her dad (aside from memories of course). When I told her that I posted this thread she got excited saying "really" over and over when I read her each of the responses up to the point I that read them to her.

I swear I have seen something like that before. What it reminds me of is a sash weight used to keep sash cords hanging straight.

That’s indeed a thick coin/token/button. Did you check what metal is it? I’d suggest you show it to a coin dealer or take it to a pawn shop and see what they say about it.
