It is kind of hard to tell for sure from your pic, but I think that is AU (55-58). If that is the case, I would be ~$10. If there is no wear on it, I would go 64/65 RB. That would put it @ $25 - $35.
I can easily see it going AU, but it looks like a pretty heavy rub on his cheek and jaw (unless it's the lighting). Still, like I said, it's a really pretty coin; wish I had one .
Well the owner, a friend, thinks it's a matte proof. But I have come across varying diagnostics and can't really tell based on the photos. I wish I had it because these photos were done in some hast when he visited recently. And I'd really like to photograph it again including its edge, all the way around. It certainly does not have what I would consider 'wire rims,' but I have seen some rather hefty rims on coins designed for circulation. But I have no 1909's that look like this coin. Matte proofs were actually trial pieces, similar to pattern status, and very lucky acquisitions, even then. : ) Some diagnostice indicate a die chip to the tight of the second 'U' in unum. Others say it is supposed to be to the right of the 'M' in umum. Never having owned a matte proof, I don't know enough about them to tell, and when I look at photos of matte proofs, I believe see two distinct varieties. Addendum: I talked with my friend this morning and he said that at the FUN Show in 2008, three graders from three top TPG's evaluated the coin and verified that it is a matte which should grade PR-64 RB.
