Says right at the bottom of the image......'starburst'. Some people make a big deal out of it (I can think of one forum member that would try to get a million for it, and insist its worth it because 'this guy' says it is), but it really carries no premium.
ThanX ThanX. Die fatigue sounds better. Starburst was a term I saw used on FeeBay and was wondering if it was a real term. Since I busted open my String & Sons roll and found gobs of this to various degrees knew it was tip jar fodder. Just wanted to check with folks in the know 1st. Thanx for the links, Krispy.
No problem. Glad to help. :thumb: And it looks like the pattern on your coin is quite extensive and consistent compared to the examples I saw on MintErrorNews.
"Starburst" is not a product of die fatigue. It occurs on early die state specimens and the radial lines do not resemble the radial flow lines that develop in later die states. I'm not sure what it is, but I suspect it represents the breakdown of some surface treatment/coating on the die face.
Mike, that is an interesting comment about treatment/coatings on a die! Are there references to such other than the typical polishings for different surface appearances? I would be interested in such a topic. Thanks Jim
My comments are purely speculative and based only on an examination of the microscopic features of the starburst rays. I could be way off base.
Other features So it is either a Early die feature or a Late die feature. Could I sort this out by looking for Other features in the strike?
I lean toward the early die state concept. Many of the later die state coins that I've seen have the lettering under the President flattened and distorted. The letters on this coin are still nicely formed.
WoW WoW. Since I have more than one from the same roll I've decided to cast it's fate to the FeeBay winds to see what it will bring. I picked one with "Starburst whatever" on both sides to offer. What a bear to try to photograph! By this time next week I will know what it is worth. Wish me luck and the same to the new owner, may it bring them joy in it's uniqueness.
Seems to be interest Seems to be interest in Starburst collecting. Someone thinks it is $2.25 worth of collectable, and it still has a day to go!:thumb:
Question Anwsered The Question has been Anwsered. It is now someone elses for $2.63. I may dig out another from my stash and see how it does.
