The Morgan dollar is far and away the most popular dollar coin, if that is what you mean by "sought after". If that isn't what you mean, please explain.
I would have to agree that the Morgan is the most sought after dollar coin series. I can't even think of a close second.
The Morgan is much more popular than the Peace dollar, although I like that coin very much as well. The Ike and Silver Eagle are not in a league with the older coins.
I think the question is looking for an answer based on evidence or knowledge, not opinion. I would think the answer could be reasonably ascertained as a function of the number of particular dollars remaining in existence and price.
The size of the market for morgans dwarfs anything else. However, I would, (even for the same price), take a draped bust over any other dollar coin.
The most unwanted coin of the late 19th Century and early 20th Century is by far and away the most popular American coin of our times. Minted from 1878-1904 and again in 1921, some did circulate but mostly in the western US. The rest were bagged and stored in vaults for up to 75 years. A whopping 270 million Morgan dollars were withdrawn from circulation and melted in 1918. Nonetheless, they had LOTS more and when they opened the vaults, I believe in 1962, everybody went bananas and the collector fever began and the Morgan dollar has always led the way in numismatics as the most sought after coin for the past 50 years.
Thanks for the reply guys. Among all the dollar coins exists from flowing hair to presidental dollar coins. I am looking to start a new collection that is cheap and accessible and has significant value to the history. Hence, i started the topic. So Morgan dollar would be the best choice eh?
I wouldn't call any Morgan dollar set worth collecting cheap. Beautiful and historical yes, but a decent set of Morgans will run in the $70K range for AU coins and triple that for mint state.
I would disagree. I think that the author was asking for the opinion of the forum. If we went on your logic, we might be saying the 2007 presidential dollar series. Although I do collect them, I would not consider them more sought after then the Morgans, Peace, or even the Ike dollars.
I do have a whole set of Presidental dollar series, but i do not find them as appealing as Morgan dollar or peace dollar. I do have a few morgan dollar with me but before i would like to start collecting it, i would like to know among all the dollar coins series, what is the most sought after dollar coins among the coins collector.
I started with the Ike series and moved to the Peace and then the Morgans. I have complete sets of the Peace, Ike's, Susan B.'s, Sac's, and Presidential dollars and I'm working on the Morgans. I also have a few trade dollars. You need to be quite rich to finish the Morgan series. I doubt that I'll ever get a couple of them.
Sounds to me like Morgans will suit your present goals. One other suggestion, they are not dollars, but you may want to look into large cents.
That kinda depends on how you define "lots more". In all the GSA sales combined, there were only about 3 million coins.
