When I first joined CT I had the idea of finding out who the most knowledgeable members were by finding out the percentages of likes vs posts hey had. Some here have well over 100% likes per post. @John Anthony is one member that comes to mind. He knows his stuff so each of his posts usually receives several likes. That said, I think I hold the record by far for the # of likes for a given post because some fool gave me over 50 likes as a joke right after I posted my theory about using likes as one way to judge members. I have since learned that likes are irrelevant. Many throw them out to long time friends! In cases were I posted some extremely good info I received nothing. Make a good joke like: "H" was just seen in a white Ford Bronco and you'll get some. I prefer the "I agree" button on another forum.
I have no idea. Is that something you can look up in your profile page somewhere? The only thing I know about "likes" is it's something I've decided to start doing more frequently. Also It's part of the stats in the upper right corner for my profile. As of right now, my likes received outnumber my posts.
Interesting, as I pay very little attention to that. Most of the coins I see I like, I don't like reading the long lawyer type reply's to threads. I do appreciate all the likes I receive.
And there's something else that you, and I suspect many others, have not thought of. CT has been around for 14 years now, but the Like button has only existed for about 2 years. So yes, as you say, likes are indeed meaningless. Prior to the time when the like button was added each member used to have their post count listed under their avatars. And many tried to use "that" as an indicator of, I dunno, meaning something. But just like "likes" - it doesn't. It doesn't mean or indicate anything at all. The one and only thing that actually does indicate anything at all about a member is the content of their posts. Not how many of them they have, and not how many people like them - the content, nothing else.
The "like-to-post" ratio is also affected by which forum you hang out in. The guys over in the ancient section generally have significantly more likes-per-post than others. In my opinion, a more meaningful measure of consistent post quality is looking for people with a high number of "featured" threads. But, it's not a competition - judging a poster by their entire corpus is really the only way to gauge the knowledge and experience of a poster.
This coin of Kavadh I of the Sassanian Empire got me 32 likes in a single post. It probably had to do with the story I included, detailing how Kavadh I was the first hippie in history, and ordered his nobles to share their wives with the poor in an orgy of free lovemaking. The nobles were not keen on the whole 'Make love not war' thing and Kavadh I ended up imprisoned in the awesomely named Castle of Oblivion, from where he escaped and came back with a vengeance. And it doesn't hurt that the portrait is so cool.
That's one reason why you are one of the exceptional posters I was posting about except I cited John.
Most likes for a single coin is probably in the low teens. I couldn't tell you what coin that was for, though. I've never considered using "like-to-post" ratio to decide whether or not to bestow respect or esteem on to a member here. That has always been earned (or not) based on post content. I suppose the mere presence of a "like" mechanism could encourage some people to be more measured in what they post. What I'd really like to know is where I can trade in my trophy points for a free tank of gasoline or steak dinner.
That is a good question, and a seemingly arbitrary limit which quite a few of us have reached. I'd rather there was no limit - or the "trophy" points led to some actual award every so often and then got reset. There seem to be quite a few mechanisms which are defunct or poorly-maintained on this board. Trophy points is one of them. Remember when there used to be a "post of the week" and people could vote on that? I liked that feature, not entirely sure why that went away. While we're on the subject, the "best answer" feature seems entirely pointless, underutilized, and quite silly, in my opinion.
The temptation to count "likes" is ravenous, but I try to ignore it for many of the reasons already stated. Regardless, I do enjoy receiving likes for my posts, but I try not to go into the depths of depression if a post doesn't receive any. "Likes" are definitely fun, in a "warm fuzzy" sort of way, but it's not really a reliable measure of anything. As also already stated, the ancients forum definitely uses likes in the best way possible: to build community. Newcomers and veterans alike give and receive many likes. Though it can at times feel like the "everyone receives a trophy for playing" syndrome, it does make for a nice atmosphere in which everyone feels appreciated by somebody. The ancients forum thus provides a wonderful example for any and all forums.
