I would hope that production of these pieces continues even though it is indeed quite rare to see them in circulation. When I was a young lad back in the sixties 50 cent pieces circulated on a regular basis. I never really understood why they stopped circulating. It seems as if that occurred almost overnight. Right now, I believe, the mint produces them basically to satisfy collectors and really does not release that many into general circulation.
It's sure not needed The future? It's sure not needed I can tell you that. No one wants it, it does not ever circulate. It's ugly, at least the reverse. It's too big. Outside of a couple or three issues I don't want any. I put it in the same catogory of Ikes, (I knew you were all waiting for that, right?). So what is the purpose (and future) of a common, un-used, not circulating, ugly, cheap large clad coin? I'll let you answer that for yourself.
'bought a nine on the tension scale Ben. Remember, there are still a couple of us who like to collect these things. :smile
The problem with the half is it is fading away from usage. They are slowly becoming only a collector coin. Same with the larger Dollar like the Ike dollar. Many stores do not have a place for them in thier cash registers. Conductors on public transportation that carry a coin changer do not have a place for them. Pay phones, what is left of them, do not have a place for a half dollar. Some coin counting machines jam if a half dollar is put in them. Most vending machines everywhere have no place for a half dollar. Many people do not even carry change anymore so a large coin is even more of something they don't want to carry. Eventually even the Mint may stop the production of them or make them a commemorative only coin. Just a coin like the .20 piece that is doomed.
He asked a openended question about the future He asked a open-ended question about the future of the coin and I gave it my best shot but you may be right about the tension thing. I find myself a little strong opinionated even for my tastes this morning. It all started with yesterday with several customers at one of my favorite dealers. You know a lot of people coming in with stuff because of the economy and all. For whatever reasons people have been led to believe this modern stuff is valuable whether bought from HSN or the mint, or even other dealers plus their own vanity I grant you. But they have these state quarters, Kennedy halves, SBA dollars, mint and proof sets and such. They just don't get anything for them and are disillusioned by coin collecting in general at that point. So I find myself (this am) tying to stress how cheap and common this modern stuff is and urging people to learn coins that really are rare and valuable. I apoligise for the "tension factor" your right I'm about at a 9.9 right now with common coins nobody really wants.
And that statement of COINS NOBODY REALLY WANTS. Sometime stop and look around you. There are probaby a millions kid coin collectors that would love to have even one of those halves and any date. I use them at flea markets and people almost fight over them when I use them to either get in or buy something. I had one guy follow me a while and then ask if I had more of them and he would pay me double for them. I laughed and sold him 4 for face value. I used to get a lot of them at the bank for just laughs when using them. As usual you kind of overstate situations and conditions. On the internet your open to millions of people and of many, many different situations.
I've got to be me love me or hate me I'm hard to ignore. As usual you kind of overstate situations and conditions. On the internet your open to millions of people and of many, many different situations. I've got to be me love me or hate me I'm hard to ignore. As is evidenced on here and I really do not care in the least about proper spelling as I'm sure all on here "know What I mean" nor do I care much about whether or not you "like me" - what I do give is my opinions about the coin business as I see it and I see a lot of it. My opinions are just that, my opinions - not yours. What I do care about is the coin business and my customers which mostly are other dealers. Now I do not know it all but I know a bunch - if you want to read me, read me if not don't - in one hundred years it will make no difference on here or anywhere else - the only difference we make in the world is helping others. We make a difference when we bring a smile to a kid, or treat an older person with respect. We make a differences when we state our own opinion especially when it is contrary to normal "so called contemporary believes. We make a difference is in finding and not being afraid to state our own opinions. We make a difference when we share what we think about the "Kennedy half dollar" so as down the road someone else will remember it and maybe decide, "you know what somebody else said that awhile back and now I see what they meant. We make a difference when start to be "less" politically correct and instead decide to be honest. Love me or hate me you got me.
I'll assume you are asking about the Kennedy Half Dollar circulation strikes and say they have no future. Near extinction with only the Proof and Mint Set examples lingering on as a moneymaker for the Mint. JMHO
See it's not hard to be nice. So bhp3rd, why not be like your last post all the time? Didn't know you had a nicer side until that post.
Not good. Except to see only Mint Set examples for a while. They are just not even obtainable and a half buck is nothing today. Not even enough to buy coffee. Ruben
Mint lists a preliminary production number of 3,400,000 total (P & D) for 2009. Is there a minimum number that has to, by law, be minted?
We could easily eliminate the Half, whose function is easily and commonly taken by using Quarters. Then we could go to the concept of rounding and eliminate the Cent. That would leave us with Nickels, Dimes, Quarters and Dollars. Of these, the Dime could easily be eliminated since we could just use two Nickels as substitute. That would leave the only useful circulating coins being the Nickel, the Quarter and the Dollar*. Why should we need anything else? *Of course, that would also require the elimination of the Dollar Bill.
I'm real nice but I have a gigantic ego, sometimes it, I'm real nice but I have a gigantic ego, sometimes it does not serve me well - I sometimes think the whole world wants as frank a discussion as I do and alas most really don't. People like vanilla I suppose because there are not many surprises, (if you get my drift). I have had the kind of life you would not want to try and survive. I would not wish my struggles on anyone in the world not even my worst enemies. I know we all have had many struggles to and I don't have a "corner on the market" on that either. Don't confuse my passion with dissension though - many things I believe are won through very hard fought battles, mostly with myself but on Coin Talk here we (me) should error on the side of kindness and helpfulness at all costs - just because I really don't like Ikes and Kennedy's and SBA's along with third party grading I guess I don't have the right on here to clubber everyone all the time regarding it - so Carl, you have helped me today and I thank you - the others also when you feel my "tension level is rises let me know as another did this am - I to can learn and grow on here! Thanks, BHPIII
I dislike the kennedy half, and hope they take it off. A lot of people, out there, think a dollar coin, or half dollar is rare, and only reason, is because they don't see them that much. IMO, the kennedys are pretty ugly, I'd like it if they brought back the walker! I hope the future of this half dollar, is being taken out of production.
-Conspiracy theroy alert!- I wonder if the govt. is just making these and the dollar coins and the $2 bills and stockpiling for a big changeover one day. They could pull the 1c, 5c, 10c, 25c and have everything be rounded to the nearest half if you use cash. Wouldn't have to mint anymore for a few years because these coins and the $2 bill see so little circulation and that would save money. JMO -COnspiracy theroy alert over.-
I truly would like to see the half dollar circulate regularly, but I know in my heart it will never happen. I try to get rolls from the bank and put them into circulation, but their fate is usually in someone's change jar. The dollar coins usually end up back at the bank, but I try with those also. Since they are pretty much commems since 2001, I'd suggest the mint make just 90% silver halves for one last year with a special reverse honoring JFK. Then the denomination can retire with some dignity and class.
No there is not. The preliminary figure they have is based on the number they have produced for the mint sets, roll sets, and mini bags in the past few years.
