I just got into collecting and wanted something old that you do not see much of, so I bought this coin it is a 1837 Feuchtwanger PCGS MS62, I paid 464.00 and some change with tax for it, did I do ok or was this a mistake. I can not find much about this coin except that it is a private token. Any help would be appreciated.
Howdy Troy - Welcome to the Forum !! Well you certainly chose an unusual example. This coin often sells for less, sometimes it sells for more. It just depends on how bad the buyer wants one. But let me say that you could have spent much less and accomplished the same goal. The only question is whether it would have made you as happy. If that coin makes you happy - then you did just fine. But next time, ask the questions before you spend your money. You might be much happier
That's a nice coin and hard to find in that kind of grade, which makes a good addition to a small cent collection.Like Speedy,I wanted one of these and finally found one in decent condition for under $150 at a dealer. You should be able to find a TON of info on these by just typing in :"Feuchtwanger Cent" into your search engine,or...on this forum.I recently posted a thread here with pics of mine. http://www.cointalk.org/forums/showthread.php?t=10080&highlight=feuchtwanger
These are generally classified as a Hard Times token. There are about 20 varieties of these cents, some rarer than others. I would be glad to id your variety and provide catalogue values for you. I can not view your pics however. I can relate some background info as well if you (or anyone else) is interested. Right now, its off to a New Year's party, so I'll check back later.
