What is a "cud"? Does it add a premium to a coin, such as, say a Morgan silver dollar? What is it exactly? Thanks.
A cud is when a piece cracks off the edge of a die and results in a filled area on the edge of the coin. a large enough cud will also result in a hollow on the opposite side of the coin. They can command a small premium depending on the size and location of the cud. Ziggy
Alf, I use this site when I want to know what the heck they are talking about..lol http://www.pcgs.com/lingo.chtml?universeid=313&letter=A
The die break is the date area of the Obv. The weakness on the Rev. is due to the lack of material to fill the design.
Thank you for your responses. I was looking at my Morgan collection the other day and found it on one of the coins obverse.
After a closer inspection of the coin in question, it appears to have three small rim cuds on the obverse between 6 and 7 o'clock. The coin is an uncirculated 1887-O Morgan.
I guess I'm going to send the coin to PCGS or NGC for grading and have them attribute it as well. I'm sure it's not rare, there must be hundreds of thousands of them out there.
