Can anyone help me by identifying this coin? On one side is 'anne' or perhaps 'johanne' with 's.3.d.g.sveg.rex' and what looks like a thistle on top of a crown with the numbers 1 and 6 at either side. On the other side is 'moneta' (I think) and 'novareg.svegie' with 'IR' under a crown and '2' and '0' either side of 'IR'. I have tried to identify it but got nowhere - I'm hoping that someone with good knowledge will be able to help. I'd really appreciate it. Thank you
Welcome to the forum Bumblebug. Please post pictures if you can. It is hard to positively ID a coin without a picture. Charlie
Thanks for the reply, Charlie. I tried to attach a photo, but when uploading a message said the file was too large!
bumblebug, Just resize the photo,do you know how?.It's been posted on here several times but if you need help just ask. I'm going to take a wild guess and say your coin might be from Poland.they had a couple of King Johns (Johannes) in the 17th century.I suspect the IR on it is actually JR (latin for J=I) and maybe his 20th year of reign.Polish coins from this period DID have MONETA:NOVA,D.G.REX (dei gratia, king),REG,SVI (Lithuania). On the other hand,if it does have a thistle, that usually has something to do with Scotland. Are you sure that's what it is? Also,if you google "svegie" all the results are from the area of Lithuania. So,in conclusion, and I'm probably 100% wrong,I'm going with King John III Sobieski 1676-1694 of Poland and Lithuania. but if I can see the photo,I can tell you for sure!!
I found a coin of my guy and it makes me think I may be way off..seems that ALL of his coins had POL for Poland on them somewhere...I'll keep looking.
Hi Mikjoo and Charlie, I managed to upload some photos. Here's hoping they reveal its secrets. Best wishes, bumblebug
It seems to be a coin of a swedish monarch Hans the 3rd (1568-1592AD) In latin it would be Johannes 3 Dei Gratia Svecie Rex. The other side says Moneta Nova Regni Svecie, or, in english, New Coins of the Swedish Kingdom.
Hi again, Notoco, Looks like you were spot on, well done! Using your information, I managed to find the coin at the following web site http://www.riksbank.com/templates/Page.aspx?id=9170 which confirms your thoughts. Thanks again, bumblebug
