Can anyone give me some idea of what caused this on this coin, because to me, it looks like one of the Brownies from the movie Willow took the worlds smallest shotgun to it. Thank you in advance for your information and input. Kyle
im not sure what exactly causes it but it is fairly common on the zincolns my guess is its some kind of zinc deterioration?
Once the thin copper shell is eroded or corroded away, the zinc deteriorates very rapidly. Copper has a hardness of about 3, and regular sand about 7, so drop a copper coated zinc cent on a sandy walk and step on it, the sand will penetrate the copper and then over time the zinc reacts leaving pits.
